Blunk Microsystems, a leading embedded software provider, announces the 2009 release of TargetFAT. Sublicensed to multiple handset providers and used worldwide in cell phones and other applications, the 2009 release of TargetFAT provides a long list of features specifically targeting embedded applications.

– High performance: For reasonable cluster sizes, the TargetFAT read/write throughput is approximately the same as the underlying I/O speed of the backing media and heads the list in user benchmarks.

– Full POSIX/Standard C API plus numerous user-requested additions: getpath(), readdir_open(), readdir_stat(), seekmark(), shred(), stat_set(), unlink_all(), vsync(), MBR read/write (including extended DOS partitions), volume label read/write.

– RAM footprint control: Compile-time setting to include free/dirty cluster bit maps for higher performance and guaranteed power-fail recovery or exclude them for smaller RAM footprint. Configurable amount of FAT caching and per-volume FOPEN_MAX setting for controlling sector and cluster cache sizes. Interactive web calculator shows RAM footprint for various configuration options.

– Robust: through its wide commercial application and active support, TargetFAT handles more anomalies than your product is likely to see, including missing ‘.’ and ‘..’ entries, leading spaces and NULL characters in file names, single FAT table, MBR with skipped partition entries or only extended entries.

– Media support: full complement of flash translation layer (FTL) products for using TargetFAT on flash memories, including newest large-page MLC NAND and fast-erase-time NOR. Applications can invoke flash background garbage collection via TargetFAT API. For higher performance, TargetFAT mount, unmount, format, and unlink events are reported to FTL. Separate SD card manager.

– Streaming support: Built-in asynchronous task-based I/O buffering option provides constant throughput even on volumes that may momentarily pause to perform flash block erase garbage collection.

TargetFAT is re-entrant and supports per-task current working directories. Designed for multi-tasking use, it also works in polled mode.

Provides API for accessing volume’s read sectors/write sectors interface from another application while locking out file system access. Used by USB Mass Storage class drivers to share target files with PC.

Robust UTF-8 file name support, proven by large installed base of China/Far East users.

Guaranteed file system integrity across unexpected shutdowns by performing automatic power-fail recovery during mount. Only data written since last synchronizing operation (fclose(), fflush(), etc.) can be lost. Closed files, directory structures, and files open for reading are never at risk.

Full mature support for FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, and VFAT.

Like all of Blunk Microsystems’ products, TargetFAT is designed for high performance on 32-bit processors. Get the advantage of high quality software supported by the original developers for your next project.
