New CHAMP-AV5 6U is First Curtiss-Wright Controls VME DSP Engine to support Symmetric Multi-Processing version of VxWorks
LEESBURG, VA – January 7, 2010 — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, OpenVPX™, VXS and CompactPCI products for the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) market, today announced support for the Wind River® VxWorks™ 6.8 operating system on its new CHAMP-AV5 VME64x DSP (Digital Signal Processing) engine. The CHAMP-AV5, Curtiss-Wright Controls’ first DSP engine utilizing the new dual-core Intel® Core™ i7-610E processor, is also the first Curtiss-Wright Controls DSP board to support VxWorks symmetric multi-processing (SMP) capabilities. VxWorks™ 6.8 enables system designers developing applications using SMP to more easily harness the power of a multi-core processor. Furthermore, SMP provides software designs with built-in scalability to support future processors that feature even greater numbers of cores.
The CHAMP-AV5 represents an industry milestone in bringing the myriad advantages of Intel processor technology to the rugged deployed COTS signal processing space. It is Curtiss-Wright Controls’ first DSP engine designed with Intel’s new dual-core Intel Core i7-610E processor and for the first time brings the low-power, high performance advantages of the Intel architecture to demanding military signal processing applications. An OpenVPX™ Ready variant, the 6U VPX CHAMP-AV7, is scheduled for release in Summer, 2010.
“We are pleased that our customers will be able to continue to use their preferred real-time operating system as we migrate our DSP products to multi-core Intel processors. The new SMP capability in VxWorks 6.8 is the key enabler to effectively develop high performance and scalable software,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing.
“Wind River and Curtiss-Wright Controls have partnered to deliver rugged, embedded DSP solutions that will speed up the development and integration of advanced signal processing systems,” said Marc Brown, vice president of marketing and strategy, VxWorks Product Division, Wind River.
About the CHAMP-AV5
The CHAMP-AV5 multi-processing board brings the floating-point performance of the Intel® Intel® Core™ i7-610E processor to the VME64x form factor standard. Utilizing a pair of 2.53 GHz dual-core Intel® Core™ i7-610E processors, the CHAMP-AV5 delivers performance rated up to 81 GFLOPS. With a 17GB/s (peak) DDR3 memory subsystem connected directly to the processor, the Core i7 is able to maximize the throughput of its SSE 4.2 vector processing units. With more cache than any previous Intel processor, the Core i7 can process larger vectors at peak rates significantly greater than was possible with previous AltiVec™-based systems.
The CHAMP-AV5 is pin-compatible with the Curtiss-Wright Controls’ MPC7447/7448-based CHAMP-AV4, which enables performance upgrades without the requiring changing the chassis, backplane, or power supplies of existing qualified systems.
The CHAMP-AV5 features a high-bandwidth PCI Express® (PCIe) architecture, with on-board PCIe connections between the processors and the PMC/XMC sites. With 8GB of Flash and 4GB of SDRAM, the CHAMP-AV5 is designed for applications with demanding storage, data logging and sensor processing requirements.
Extensive Software Support
The CHAMP-AV5 is supported with an extensive suite of software including support for Wind River VxWorks and Linux operating environments. Additional software support includes Inter-processor communications (IPC) and Curtiss-Wright Controls’ Continuum Vector SSE-optimized signal processing library.
