SAN DIEGO, CA – April 1, 2008 – Space Micro Inc. today announced that their space dosimeter card had been successfully integrated at NASA Goddard into the Living with a Star (LWS), Space Environments Testbed (SET) experiment hardware. This hardware was designed by Clemson University, lead by Dr. Peter McNulty, and was delivered to NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in 2007. Space Micro manufactured and tested the space-qualified card per NASA Goddard space quality standards. This specific experiment is called Dosimetry Intercomparison and Miniaturization Experiment (DIME), which will monitor the radiation dose seen in space using multiple radiation detector technologies. The objectives of this experiment are to use five different COTS Micro-dosimeters to characterize radiation induced total ionizing dose, displacement damage, and single event effects in space.

Mr. Dave Strobel, CEO of Space Micro said, “We are pleased to have worked with both NASA and Clemson University to develop and manufacture this space dosimetry hardware per NASA quality standards, to support NASA’s Living with a Star program. It should enable the space weather community to learn a great deal more about the space environment and how it impacts our daily lives”.

The goals and benefits of this technology are to provide data to allow appropriate dosimetry selection in future missions to characterize and resolve operational anomalies, and also to validate particle transport codes by varying shielding thicknesses on RADFETs. The DIME experiment card is scheduled to be launched as a secondary payload on an Air Force booster within the next 12 months.
