VMETRO, a world leader in VXS (VITA 41) solutions for Critical Embedded Systems, today announced an extensive ongoing development program for products based on the VPX (VITA 46) standard. VMETRO’s VPX products will be available in both 6U and 3U versions, and will include state-of-the-art solutions for FPGA and PowerPC processing as well as Analog and Digital I/O products.

At the same time, VMETRO will continue to expand its leading Phoenix VXS family with new state-of-the-art products. This allows customers to choose the optimal architecture for demanding Data Acquisition, Processing and Recording applications within Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) programs, including Electronic Warfare (EW), Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) and Imaging.

“VMETRO is at the forefront of high-speed serial interconnect technologies. By providing our customers with both VXS and VPX solutions, we will strengthen our position as the key supplier in our industry.” says Thomas Nygaard, CTO at VMETRO. “VXS is at the pinnacle of the VMEbus evolution in continually enhancing performance and a number of boards are available from different vendors including VMETRO’s Phoenix family of air- and conduction-cooled VXS Systems. VPX is now forging a new path as a complementary technology for very high end complete system solutions. Consequently, we support both of these important technologies: VXS for high-end VME applications, and VPX for the ultimate in no-compromise bandwidth and I/O. Both play important roles in our product development strategy.”

The VPX specification, and the complementary VITA 48 specification, establish a solution for the highest levels of processor performance and ruggedization in COTS products. This proposed ANSI standard breaks from the traditional scheme of VMEbus to merge the latest in connector and packaging technology with the latest in bus and serial fabric technology. VPX combines best-in-class technologies to ensure a very long technology cycle similar to that of the original VMEbus solution. Traditional parallel VMEbus can be supported by VPX through bridging schemes to ensure a solid migration pathway. VPX has been designed with the Defense/Aerospace community in mind, and is notable in that the working group comprises a strong set of component vendors, computer system vendors and major systems integration companies working together.

Products will be launched in the latter half of 2007.
