SIE Computing Solutions Introduces Application-Ready Video Processing Solution for Rugged Situational Awareness

Brockton, MA – June 6, 2011 – SIE Computing Solutions Inc. (www.sie-cs.com), a provider of rugged electronic systems for mission-critical and performance-critical embedded computing platforms deployed in harsh environments, today announced its new application-ready video processing solution designed for rugged situational awareness in unmanned vehicle and remote surveillance applications.

There is a growing need for real-time, remote video connections to accommodate a variety of sophisticated surveillance, vehicle autonomy and situational awareness applications. While relatively easy to connect and receive high quality video streams with a more stationary platform such as a computer, this becomes a significantly larger challenge in a non-equipment-friendly environment. Processing power, system power dissipation, data bandwidth, data connectivity and video latency all become critically important components in designing a reliable embedded mobile system to process and manage multiple channels of real-time video in a harsh environment.

Based on Beyond Electronics’ real-time secure video/audio capture and process technology, SIE’s network-ready solution provides advanced video processing capabilities including low-latency and real-time video streaming over a network. The new offering from SIE can be used in a number of unmanned vehicle applications deployed in challenging environments such as serial UAVs in the battlefield, remote surveillance, mining, transportation, homeland security, border control, exploration of radioactive environments, oil and gas exploration, and much more. Additionally, advanced situational awareness overlay capabilities allow a remote driver to see a detailed depiction of the surrounding terrain, with key spatial information elements of interest highlighted directly on the video image. These elements include the identification of potential obstacles, altitude information, navigation information, and relevant area-based details such as the identification of urban areas, etc.

Using standard building blocks, the new software-agnostic video processing solution from SIE features full integration of board sets, backplanes, power/cooling and I/O. The capabilities of the hardware system also include the ability to rapidly encrypt and decrypt data, efficient storage and retrieval of actionable data (e.g., when something in the environment changes), and multiple video inputs of up to four per card. The technology is already in use by a major Heavy Equipment Manufacturer for mining applications in the US and overseas.

“As unmanned vehicle technology becomes increasingly more sophisticated, it can be used in many new applications, which provides a tremendous benefit for ensuring the safety and security of military and industrial personnel,” said Chris Boutilier, president and CEO of SIE Computing Solutions. “The new video processing solution for rugged situational awareness applications leverages SIE’s proven history of developing embedded computing systems designed to thrive in harsh environments, all created with the ultimate goal of eliminating risk, time-to-market and costs for our customers worldwide.”
