New Analog-to-Digital Converter Mezzanine Card Speeds Integration of FPGAs for Signal Intelligence (SIGINT), Electronic Counter Measures (ECM), and Radar Subsystems
High Wycombe, UK – May 5, 2009 — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, VXS, and CompactPCI products for the aerospace and defense (A&D) market, has introduced its highest resolution FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC/VITA 57) module, the new ADC511, a 400MS/s 14-bit, dual channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) card. Designed for use in demanding DSP applications such as signal intelligence (SIGINT), electronic counter measures (ECM), and radar, the ADC511 speeds and simplifies the integration of FPGAs into embedded system design by providing high bandwidth I/O direct to the host card’s FPGAs. The module eliminates data bottlenecks to increase DSP subsystem performance by routing high-speed ADC I/O directly to the host board’s FPGAs via the FMC connector.
“The ADC511 is the latest member of our broad family of FMC modules,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager of Modular Solutions, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “It provides designers of FPGA-based DSP subsystems with a high-bandwidth, low-latency approach for coupling FPGA and ADC I/O and creates very powerful rugged deployed aerospace and defense solutions.”
Available in both air-cooled and conduction-cooled rugged versions, the ADC511 has two onboard 14-bit 400MHz Texas Instruments ADS5474 ADC devices. Each of the module’s ADCs supports a sampling rate up to 400 MS/s, within an analog bandwidth of >1.7GHz, and provides 14-bits of digital output. By routing the ADC device interfaces directly to the FMC connector, the ADC511 enables an FPGA on the host board to directly control and receive data. A choice of sample clock sources is provided, including an onboard source that supports sampling rates of 300, 320 and 400 MS/s, as well as the ability to utilize an external sample clock. Input and output triggers are provided enabling the number of input channels to be increased by synchronizing multiple ADC511 modules.
About FMC (VITA 57)
FMC modules enable I/O devices that reside on an industry standard (VITA 57) mezzanine card to be attached to, and directly controlled by FPGAs that reside on a host board. About half the size of a PMC mezzanine module, FMCs provide a small footprint, reduced I/O bottlenecks, increased flexibility, and reduced cost through the elimination of redundant interfaces. To maximize data throughput and minimize latency, the FMC connector provides numerous I/O pins that support high-speed signals for moving data between the FMC and the FPGA.
Software/HDL Support
Curtiss-Wright Controls provides HDL design reference code for the ADC511 to simplify and speed integration into the HDL development suite for Curtiss-Wright FPGA host boards, such as the FPE650 (Quad FPGA VPX), HPE720 (MPC8641D/dual FPGA VPX) and FPE320 (3U FPGA VPX).
