WARREN, MICHIGAN, 30 April, 2007-Meggitt Defense Systems unveiled its latest ruggedized military COTS cooling technologies-featuring its modular Ultra Compact Cooler and Compact Cooler-for the U.S. Army at its Expedited Modernization Initiative Procedure (EMIP) Tactical Wheeled Vehicle Component Demonstrations.

Meggitt Defense Systems responded to the Army’s invitation to demonstrate its electronics cooling breakthroughs under requirements for Distribution/Mission Enhancements addressing power management.

According to Gerald Janicki, Director of Marketing and Business Development for Meggitt Defense Systems Electronics Cooling, “Current and future tactical wheeled and tracked vehicles-as well as sea and air combat platforms-require a significant increase in electronics for command and communications in network-centric joint operations. These electronics, in turn, create a sizable amount of heat. Our advanced modular precision coolers meet these requirements today and tomorrow because they are based on battle-proven cooling technologies and are designed for future ruggedized COTS electronics. We have seen marked success with the effects our ruggedized precision coolers have in combat operations.”

Janicki explained that Meggitt Defense Systems successfully demonstrated a small portable ruggedized refrigeration system with 1 kW active cooling to a secondary loop of liquid to directly cool critical electronics and communication equipment without costly upgrades to engines or other systems. The system is designed for internal or external mounting to vehicles.

The solution leverages battle-proven M1A2 SEP Main Battle Tank Thermal Management System (TMS) refrigeration technology and components to provide portable and flexible cooling without impacting the engine cooling system. In addition, the small units are designed to support COTS electronics and are designed with electronics growth in mind.

Janicki added that the demonstration presented similar technologies developed for platforms planned for the Army’s Future Combat Systems. “Our design shows real experience with the development and production of more than 900 TMS for the Abrams tank.”

Following the demonstration to the Army at the EMIP, Meggitt Defense Systems will be demonstrating its cooling systems for air and sea applications around the globe.
