Collaboration Will Deliver More Powerful, More Reliable, More Cost-Effective Solutions for Embedded Computing in Defense and Aerospace

With the goal of providing defense and aerospace embedded computing solutions that are more powerful, more reliable and more cost-effective, LynuxWorks, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, and GE Fanuc Embedded Systems, a leading provider of rugged embedded computing solutions, today announced that the two companies would collaborate to create “Centers of Excellence,” which will offer advanced developer support for systems based on the two companies’ products.

“Mission-critical reliability is a key element for our customers, and LynuxWorks shares this commitment with GE Fanuc Embedded Systems,” said Steve Blackman, director of business development, LynuxWorks. “Our expanding global relationship with GE Fanuc Embedded Systems allows our customers to benefit from the industry-leading products that we have developed — and makes them available and supported across GE Fanuc’s product line.”

The companies announced that they would create Centers of Excellence to serve as key interfaces for technical development and support for LynuxWorks and GE Fanuc Embedded Systems products. The first Centers of Excellence to be announced are GE Fanuc Embedded Systems facilities in Towcester, U.K., and Raleigh, N.C. All GE Fanuc Embedded Systems engineers and developers, wherever they are located, will have access to all releases of LynuxWorks products, including access to the source code of LynuxWorks Board Support Packages (BSPs) and device drivers.

“Increasingly, our customers are telling us that they want us to take responsibility for base-level hardware and software integration, freeing them to focus on higher level issues — and this relationship with LynuxWorks enables us to respond to that customer requirement,” said Andy West, global product manager, SBC Software, at GE Fanuc Embedded Systems. “By working closely with LynuxWorks, we will be able to develop solutions that are more complete, reducing our customers’ time to market and increasing their competitiveness.”

GE Fanuc Embedded Systems plans to make the LynuxWorks LynxOS 5 RTOS with Symmetric Multiprocessing available across the company’s extensive — and growing — range of VPX-based single board computers and DSP systems. The initial port will be to the VPXtreme6 6U VPX SBC610 single board computer, which is based on the dual-core 8641D PowerPC and delivers exceptional I/O flexibility.

Also planned to benefit from the LynuxWorks software environment is the 6U VPX DSP230, the world’s first 0.8-inch pitch quad 8641D solution. Both boards can support symmetric or asymmetric multiprocessing, with 64-bit DDR2 memory controllers assigned to each core for increased operating system isolation: alternatively, memory is shareable between the cores. When combined with LynxOS 5, the SBC610, DSP230 and future products provide improved architectural flexibility, predictable hard real-time performance, true linear scalability and superior power management.
