BOSTON, MA–Sep 26, 2006 — EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE — LynuxWorks, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, today announced that it now supports the full range of Xilinx® 32-bit embedded processing solutions. The growing alliance between the two embedded leaders marks an advance for developers looking for a powerful, open standards-based, flexible foundation on which to build their applications.
With this announcement, LynuxWorks becomes the first embedded real-time operating system (RTOS) company to offer both open source and open standards-based operating systems for all Xilinx 32-bit hard and soft processor cores, including the PowerPC(TM) and MicroBlaze(TM) processor-based field programmable gate array (FPGA) platforms. For the PowerPC, LynuxWorks will offer LynxOS, the only real-time operating system to offer a Linux application binary interface (ABI), which gives developers the flexibility to use both Linux® and LynxOS® binary applications on a single system. Also for the PowerPC, LynuxWorks is providing its BlueCat® embedded Linux solution, giving a cost-effective solution backed by a full embedded support and services organization. For the Xilinx MicroBlaze soft-core processor solution, LynuxWorks will offer support for uC-Linux, again utilizing LynuxWorks embedded support and services group to help get MicroBlaze developers up and running fast.
LynuxWorks will also offer its Luminosity embedded IDE across all of the RTOS and processor offerings. This Eclipse-based tools suite incorporates the compiler tools used by developers of both PowerPC and MicroBlaze, and gives a consistent RTOS-aware debugging solution across the two processors and also offers unique profiling support for both LynxOS and BlueCat.
“LynuxWorks has a long history of providing open standards software support with both our LynxOS and BlueCat Linux product lines,” said Robert Day, vice president of Marketing for LynuxWorks. “To be able to add Xilinx embedded processor solutions to our stable of LynuxWorks’ supported devices opens powerful new options to customers looking for the most flexible, sophisticated and cost-effective embedded platforms.”
The Xilinx Virtex(TM)-4 platform FPGAs with embedded processors are the only devices on the market that offer multiple domain-optimized platforms capable of being tailored to meet the requirements of different applications in a wide array of market segments. The platforms offer performance that beats competing FPGAs in every category, including low power consumption, superior signal integrity and the highest bandwidth memory interfaces.
The Xilinx MicroBlaze solution is a scalable processor system that enables embedded developers to tune performance to match the requirements of target applications. The “soft” processor core can be implemented in the Xilinx Virtex and Spartan(TM) FPGA families, and offers unparalleled ease of use and flexibility with user-configurable peripheral hardware options.
“The combination of LynuxWorks’ LynxOS RTOS, BlueCat Linux and Luminosity development tools with the Xilinx FPGAs featuring PowerPC and MicroBlaze processors offers embedded system designers a powerful yet cost-effective solution,” said Mark Jensen, senior manager of Embedded Ecosystem Strategic Marketing at Xilinx. “Our alliance with LynuxWorks allows us to provide customers with flexible, high-performance development platforms for a wide variety of embedded systems.”
LynuxWorks’ LynxOS provides broad conformance to open and de facto standards and is the first choice of customers who cannot afford downtime. LynxOS provides a superior foundation for sophisticated real-time systems. LynuxWorks’ LynxOS is the leading POSIX® conformant embedded operation system on the market and forms the core of a wide array of systems, from postal mail sorting solutions to air traffic control systems, and from office machinery to military field artillery.
LynuxWorks’ BlueCat Linux is an implementation of the 2.6 Linux kernel, which supports microprocessor control and is enhanced for use in a wide array of embedded systems, from small consumer devices to large-scale, multi-CPU systems. BlueCat Linux offers the flexibility of open source software that leverages the Linux model and extends developers’ investment by providing a simple path to migrate to real-time, deterministic performance.
