New CHAMP-AV5 VME64x DSP Card Features Dual Low-Power P.A. Semi 1682 Processors

LEESBURG, VA, Calif. – December 20, 2007 — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX products for the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) market, and P.A. Semi, Inc., a fabless semiconductor company delivering the high-performance, low-power PWRficient processor family, today announced that they have partnered to deliver high performance, low-power rugged multicomputer VMEbus-based signal processing boards based on P.A. Semis dual-core PA6T-1682M PWRficient™ processor. The new CHAMP-AV5 with the low-power, high performance PWRficient processor delivers 100 percent better board-level performance-per-watt than the previous CHAMP board.

“Were proud to be able to announce that our partnership with P.A. Semi has resulted in the first DSP multicomputer board to provide the significant power consumption savings offered by the PWRficient processor,” said Lynn Patterson , Vice President and General Manager of Curtiss Wrights Modular Solutions group. “The A&D signal processing market demands larger and larger multicomputer systems to handle the increasing amount of realtime sensor data that needs to be processed. The efficiency of the P.A Semi processor allows us to double the computing power of the previous generation board, while consuming much less power. It is rare to have such a ‘win-win situation where customers can upgrade their system performance without any power penalty.”

Curtiss-Wrights first PWRficient processor-based DSP board, the CHAMP-AV5, a 6U VME 64x design combines the breakthrough performance and power savings of two 2GHz dual-core 1682 processors with a reconfigurable Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA co-processor to achieve approximately 100 percent greater performance/Watt compared to earlier board-level DSP engine designs. The CHAMP-AV5 is ideal for upgrading existing signal processing systems that require significantly improved DSP performance.

“The deployment of the PWRficient processor in Curtiss-Wrights flagship DSP line is a huge win for P.A. Semi, and just one of many more to come,” said Dan Dobberpuhl, C.E.O., P.A. Semi. “Our two gigahertz low-power, high performance processor cores combined with two megabytes of L2 cache, a flexible I/O subsystem and two DDR2 memory controllers make it an ideal choice for Curtiss-Wrights CHAMP line and an excellent product to tackle the half-billion dollar VMEbus market.”

The CHAMP-AV5 is fully supported by Curtiss-Wright‘s Continuum system software solutions including the Continuum InterProcessor Communications Library (IPC) and the Continuum Vector Library. Both software packages are fully backwards compatible with previous generation cards to facilitate a smooth transition path for upgrading the system. In addition, Continuum Insights, a software package specifically designed and delivered for addressing system and software development challenges across a multicomputer, will also be available for the CHAMP-AV5.
