Fully Integrated/Qualified MPMC-935x Family of 3U Subsystems Operates in 71°C Temperature with Forced Air Cooling
SAN DIEGO, CA – October 11, 2011 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (CWCEC), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, OpenVPX™, VXS and CompactPCI products for the rugged deployed defense and aerospace market, has introduced a new family of 5-slot natural convection-cooled rugged ½ ATR-style 3U CompactPCI and VPX systems. The MPMC-935x family of Multi-Platform Mission Computers, developed by CWCEC’s Embedded Systems group in San Diego, CA, features a built-in power supply and payload modules from CWCEC’s family of embedded computing boards. These modules include Intel® and Power Architecture® processor boards, Xilinx® FPGA processors, and a variety of I/O modules to meet any program requirements. Curtiss-Wright offers six standard MPMC-935x configurations that range from one (1) to five (5) processing nodes and offer I/O complements of serial ports, Gigabit Ethernet switching, graphics and more.
“The MPMC-935x family of Mission Computers delivers the compact, rugged small form factor footprint demanded for SWaP-constrained environments, combined with the high-density, high performance processing power needed for the most demanding compute applications,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing.
The MPMC-935x provides the highest functional density available in a small package. With an integrated fan assembly, the MPMC-935x system provides the thermal management capabilities required to cool multiple SBCs and FPGA processor modules in harsh environments. Optimal system cooling is ensured via thermal transfer between card edges of its conduction cooled 3U cPCI cards and the side walls of the system enclosure. Environmental and EMI sealing is employed for accommodation of a wide variety of deployed platforms and environments. Packaged in an ultra compact form factor and equipped with reliable, industry-leading processing solutions, the MPMC-935x has all the elements required of mission computers in space-constrained applications.
The MPMC-935x uses advanced packaging techniques to provide optimal processing power in a rugged enclosure that measures a compact 600 cubic inches, yet is able to operate and survive in maximum external air temperatures from 55 to 71°C while dissipating as much as 350W and weighing in at less than 20lb. This rugged Packaged COTS (PCOTS) system can be readily configured to meet the needs of the full range of military or aerospace requirements, from benign laboratory to harsh deployed ground vehicle environments, simplifying and speeding the development and deployment of critical applications.
The PCOTS Advantage
The MPMC-935x can greatly reduce up-front development costs. As a PCOTS system it delivers economies of scale in production that reduce recurring costs while meeting the I/O, performance and environmental requirements of unique, demanding military programs. It features a rugged enclosure designed to the meet military specifications including MIL-STD-810 for environmental conditions, MIL-STD-461 for EMI, and MIL-STD-704 for power. This rugged computing system is designed to fill multiple roles in air and land vehicles.
