ALAMEDA, Calif., February 2, 2010 – Wind River today announced the immediate availability of its latest suite of development tools, including Wind River Workbench 3.2, Wind River On-Chip Debugging 3.2 and Wind River Compiler 5.8, that can help a broad range of customers, including those in the automotive, industrial, and networking market segments, reduce device software development cycles, eliminate project delays and accelerate time-to-market. Wind River’s development tools enable greater choice and flexibility for customers, whether they choose to develop systems based on Wind River’s VxWorks and Wind River Linux operating systems or use their own choice of operating system.

“While Wind River is best known for its operating systems, we have been providing our customers with a rich set of development tools and support for many years,” said Tomas Evensen, chief technology officer, Wind River, and original creator of the Diab compiler. “The embedded device market is continuously evolving and a one-size-fits-all development tools approach is limiting. We are committed to delivering innovative development tools to support both our Wind River and non-Wind River operating systems while providing a level of integration, services and support not possible from the many smaller companies in the embedded tools market.”

Wind River Workbench

Wind River Workbench is a fully integrated end-to-end, open standards-based collection of tools for device software design, development, debugging, testing and management for VxWorks and Wind River Linux. Workbench 3.2 supports the latest versions of VxWorks and Wind River Linux and provides the foundation for Wind River Workbench On-Chip Debugging 3.2. Workbench 3.2 is based on the open industry standard Eclipse 3.5 IDE which enables integration with a multitude of third-party and in-house developed tools. In 2008, Wind River Workbench was awarded Best Commercial Eclipse-Based Developer Tool by the Eclipse Foundation.

Wind River On-Chip Debugging

Wind River On-Chip Debugging is an extensible JTAG solution that simplifies the entire embedded development lifecycle and optimizes developer efficiency. Wind River On-Chip Debugging consists of the Workbench On-Chip Debugging IDE, which powers a choice of two hardware-based debug units: the high-performance, multicore-capable Wind River ICE 2 and the entry-level USB-based Wind River Probe. Wind River On-Chip Debugging supports a wide range of target operating systems on the latest 32-bit and 64-bit processors based on ARM, Coldfire, Intel, MIPS, and PowerPC architectures.

Workbench On-Chip Debugging 3.2 is optimized for development of multicore, multi-OS, and virtualized environments, and debugging the most complex system-level issues such as deadlocks, memory corruption, and core synchronization. Enhancements include the ability to visualize and perform run-control operations on multiple target systems, CPU cores, and kernel objects such as threads, tasks, and processes within a single windowed environment. Wind River ICE 2 and Wind River Probe utilize Wind River’s JTAG acceleration technology, which optimizes use of the JTAG interface bandwidth resulting in a highly responsive and efficient debug experience.

“As one of the world’s largest producers of lithium-ion batteries for hybrid-electric automobiles and medium duty trucks, we’re continuously developing new high-power, high-energy, compact, and lightweight battery systems,” said Michael Trader, software/systems manager, Compact Power, Inc. “Our technology is key to building new hybrid and electric vehicles. To meet our customers rapidly changing needs, we’re under pressure to bring these battery systems to market quickly and need a development tools supplier that gives us confidence to meet our deadlines. Wind River came through with a cost-effective, integrated tools environment, including Workbench and Wind River Compiler, and is backing it up with world-class support.”

Wind River Compiler

Wind River Compiler, formerly known as the Diab compiler, is an OS agnostic tool suite, including a C/C++ compiler, an assembler, a linker, ANSI C and C++ libraries, and an instruction set simulator. It is the most reliable and mature compiler in the industry, with a proven track record for generating compact and highly optimized code for thousands of designs and millions of devices using a wide variety of processor architectures. Diab compiler technology is widely used in the most demanding and mission-critical applications, such as automotive under-the-hood, industrial and aerospace and defense systems.

Wind River Workbench On-Chip Debugging 3.2 and Wind River Compiler 5.8 add support for a multitude of new processors, including the Power Architecture e200 core-based automotive controllers from STMicroelectronics and Freescale, select Intel® Xeon® and Intel® Core™2 Duo processors targeted for a wide range of embedded applications, and Freescale QorIQ P4080 Communications Processors targeted for high-performance networking applications. Additional new processor support includes Cavium Networks ECONA processors, Freescale i.MX51 and i.MX25 multimedia application processors, and RMI® Alchemy Au1300 media processors.

Wind River offers an integrated solution for debugging and compiling, and is a one-stop shop for customers in need of support. For the fourth consecutive year, Wind River received certification under the Service Capability and Performance (SCP) Support Standard, a standard that measures an organization’s capability to deliver world-class customer support.

Availability and Support

Wind River Workbench 3.2 supporting Wind River Linux 3.0.2 and VxWorks version 6.8, Wind River On-Chip Debugging 3.2 and Wind River Compiler 5.8, are immediately available to customers worldwide.
