AMBLER, Pa. – December 2007 – MEN Micro Inc., a world-renowned provider of embedded computing and I/O solutions for demanding industrial, mobile and harsh environment applications, now offers a new 2eSST, 6U VMEbus single board computer (SBC) that reaches a data transfer rate of up to 320 MB/s using a Tundra TSI148 bridge controller. Built around Freescale’s new PowerQUICC-III PowerPC MPC8548 consisting of a highly integrated e500 core with an FPU (floating point unit) and MMU (memory management unit) as well as L2 cache support, the new A17 provides clock frequencies of up to 1.5 GHz. The boards advanced technology offers exceptional performance levels while maintaining backwards compatibility with older standards, such as VME64X and VME.

Using only one slot, the A17 can function as either a master or slave in legacy VME environments to provide embedded designers with maximum flexibility. Its flexibility, coupled with the SBCs high performance, makes the board ideal for a variety of applications including industrial control, medical equipment and mobile communications.

The soldered 2 GB of fast ECC-controlled DDR2 SDRAM memory firmly withstands shock and vibration, making the A17 suitable for mobile applications. The Flash disk for program storage is also soldered, and the fast, non-volatile FRAM is ideal for applications that require low power consumption.

The A17s front panel has two Gigabit Ethernet and two COM interfaces accessible via an RJ45 connection. Two additional Gigabit Ethernet channels are available at the optional P0 rear connector.

The board offers two PMC slots that operate at up to 64-bit/66 MHz. One of the mezzanine slots supports rear I/O and can be used for XMC modules with a PCI Express x1, x2, x4 or x8 link. The second PMC-only slot, connected to the onboard FPGA, can also be used for individual additional functions implemented in the FPGA.

The two mezzanine slots extend the A17s functionality, enabling the incorporation of additional graphics capability, mass storage and further Ethernet or field bus interfaces as well as a variety of industrial I/Os, including binary and analog channels. As an alternative to or an extension of PMC modules currently available, other I/O functions can be implemented as IP cores in the FPGA for specific application needs.

The SBC operates over an extended temperature range of -40 to +85 °C (-40°F to +185°F). The RoHS-compliant board offers a standard availability that extends to at least 2017 guaranteeing against obsolescence. The A17 comes with comprehensive board support packages (BSPs) for Linux, VxWorks and QNX based on MEN’s own “BIOS” for PowerPC processors (MENMON).

Pricing for the A17 starts at $2,397. Delivery is six weeks ARO.
