RTI Offers Leading DDS Implementation Without Charge to IR&D, SBIR and University Projects

Real-Time Innovations (RTI)Real-Time Innovations (RTI)—March 17, 20090
FacebookTwitterPinterestLinkedInTumblrRedditVKWhatsAppEmail

Real-Time Innovations (RTI), The Real-Time Middleware Experts, announced today that RTI Data Distribution Service will now be without cost for most Independent Research and Development (IR&D), Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and university projects. This makes DDS technology accessible to many projects that cannot acquire commercial software or accept the effort and risk inherent in using immature or unsupported open-source options.

Dr. Stan Schneider, RTI’s CEO commented, “RTI’s user-friendly, top-performing DDS implementation is now available without cost or paperwork. Further, it comes with a free online support system, and for a small fee, with the industry’s best support. RTI consistently achieves 98 percent customer satisfaction. This announcement expands that experience to many more projects.”

Support Options

In addition to access to the most mature DDS implementation, RTI’s no-cost licenses give developers the support benefits of a widely used commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) product. This support improves productivity, accelerates implementation and minimizes risk.

• RTI Data Distribution Service includes comprehensive documentation. The bundled tutorial walks developers through the process of creating DDS applications and taking advantage of powerful DDS features such as data-centric publish-subscribe communication and real-time Quality of Service control (QoS).

• RTI maintains a free public knowledge base. It currently contains nearly 100 examples, tips and other articles on the use of DDS and RTI Data Distribution Service.

• Low-cost, hands-on training is available at public DDS Workshops, currently scheduled in the Boston, Huntsville, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley and Washington, DC, areas.

• Annual technical support may be purchased at a fixed cost of $9,300 for up to three developers. This includes phone and email support and access to a more extensive knowledge base.

DDS Education

Developers interested in DDS who do not qualify for RTI’s no-cost licenses can take advantage of a new 30-day trial download of RTI Data Distribution Service, the accompanying tutorial, RTI’s public knowledge base and DDS Workshops.

“Hundreds of projects already use RTI’s DDS implementation to build distributed real-time applications,” commented Schneider. “Many more could benefit from the power of DDS, but have not had the time or money to invest in learning the technology. With these new free and low-cost educational resources, RTI is making DDS much easier to obtain and learn.”

Webinar

RTI will host a webinar on March 31 to introduce the benefits of DDS and RTI’s new no-cost licenses. Interested editors, analysts, system architects and software developers can register at www.rti.com/events.

About DDS

Standardized by the Object Management Group (OMG), DDS defines the mechanisms, programming interfaces and protocols that distributed applications use to communicate with each other. DDS was designed specifically to meet the performance and QoS requirements of real-time and embedded systems. As a result, it has been widely adopted for time-critical and mission-critical applications including tactical defense systems; aerospace; railroad and roadway traffic management; industrial control; Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA); financial market data distribution; and automated trading.

Use of DDS can dramatically reduce the software lifecycle costs and risk associated with architecting systems that will be deployed, maintained and upgraded during the course of many years.

• DDS meets performance and operational requirements previously achievable only with proprietary or in-house developed middleware. By eliminating custom software and providing familiar interfaces, DDS accelerates development and eases maintenance.

• DDS decouples applications, avoiding the creation of hardcoded, brittle and stovepipe distributed systems. With DDS, individual subsystems can be added or upgraded without affecting other software. DDS applications are also interoperable across disparate operating systems, processor architectures and programming languages.

• DDS provides vendor independence. Applications are both portable and interoperable across compliant implementations.

About RTI Data Distribution Service

RTI Data Distribution Service is the most mature, easy to use, widely adopted, high performing, scalable, interoperable and well-supported DDS solution. Commercially available for more than 12 years, the core technology in RTI Data Distribution Service powers hundreds of unique commercial designs and hundreds of independent research projects. More than 100,000 individual copies have been licensed to date.

No-cost research licenses to RTI Data Distribution Service are available for the Windows and Linux platforms. Application programming interfaces support C, C++, Java and .NET (C# and C++/CLI).

Research licenses are available for many uses, including:

• Internally funded IR&D for pre-commercial and pre-award purposes such as developing proofs of concept, demonstrations, prototypes and proposals.

• Government-funded research conducted under the initial phase of a small-business program such as the U.S. Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program.

• University and non-profit research and education.
