PISCATAWAY, N.J., May 22, 2007 – Power.org™, the open collaborative organization that enables, develops and promotes Power Architecture technology, announced today that celebrated scientist Jim Bell of Cornell University will join keynote speakers from AMCC, Freescale Semiconductor and IBM at the first-ever vendor-neutral Power Architecture™ Developer Conference, to be held in Austin, Texas, September 24 – 25, 2007.
Setting the stage for two days of intensive education, Brian Wilkie of AMCC, Lynelle McKay of Freescale and Jim Kahle of IBM will share their visions on how Power Architecture technology breaks down barriers to innovation across a diverse range of markets and applications. Closing the Conference’s second day, Dr. Jim Bell, a leading scientist for Mars exploration, will share his quest for the stars and inspire attendees to leverage technology as they strive to drive their designs to achieve the unimaginable.
Dr. Bell is an associate professor and director of graduate studies in Cornell University’s Astronomy Department. He is the lead scientist for the Pancam color imaging system on the NASA Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity and a science team member of the NASA Mars Pathfinder, Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR), Mars Odyssey Orbiter, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter missions and the 2009 Mars Science Laboratory Rover mission teams, Frequently published in astronomy journals and popular astronomy magazines, Dr. Bell authored “Postcards from Mars,” a pictorial history of the Rover missions, and edited a book about the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous mission.
Brian Wilkie is vice president and assistant general Manager of the Integrated Communications Products at AMCC. Mr. Wilke spent 25 years with Motorola Semiconductor, first in applications, then as European marketing manager for microprocessors. In 2004 he joined AMCC as vice president and general manager of the PowerPC® business which AMCC acquired from IBM. After building the team and the business, the PowerPC business was merged into the Integrated Communications Products Unit to maximize the benefit of Power Architecture across AMCC’s product range.
Lynelle McKay, senior vice president and general manager, Networking & Computing Systems Group at Freescale Semiconductor, leads the innovation and development of processing intelligence and connectivity solutions for the global network – from infrastructure to access to enterprise to small office to the digital home. Freescale’s networking team delivers products including the market share-leading PowerQUICC communications processors, built on Power Architecture technology, and the radio frequency (RF) power products for the wireless infrastructure market. Lynelle joined Motorola in 1988, and throughout her career has held positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of product development, applications, product line management and operations management.
Jim Kahle, an IBM Fellow, chief architect and director of technology at the Austin Design Center for the Cell Technology, a partnership with IBM, Sony and Toshiba, has more than 20 years of research and development experience in chip design. He is a renowned expert in the microprocessor industry for delivering breakthrough designs. He has been key to the definition of the Power Architecture and of the superscalar techniques used in IBM. Mr. Kahle has been on the forefront of Dual Core designs, Asymetric Multiprocessors, Superscalar design, and SMT microarchitectures and was a key designer for the RIOS I processor that launched IBM into the RS/6000 line of workstations and servers. In addition, he a founding member of the Somerset Design Center, project manager for the PowerPC 603 and follow on processors, and the chief architect for the POWER4 core.
The Power Architecture Developer Conference, with its growing list of sponsors including AMCC, Cadence, Freescale Semiconductor, IBM, Mentor Graphics, and OpenSystems Publishing, was created to provide technical education and industry interaction across a wide range of interests and applications.
