CHAMP-AV8 6U OpenVPX™ DSP Engine Features two quad-core Intel® Core™ i7-2715QE processors and supports Gen2 PCIe-to-sRIO protocol conversion
ASHBURN, VA — January 5, 2011 — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, OpenVPX™, VXS and CompactPCI products for the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) market, has introduced the CHAMP-AV8, its first rugged, high performance OpenVPX DSP (digital signal processing) engine based on the new quad-core Intel® CoreTM i7-2715QE processor. The new CHAMP-AV8 is also Curtiss-Wright Controls’ first DSP engine to offer IDT’s upcoming Gen2 PCIe-to-sRIO protocol conversion bridging semiconductor product, bringing the performance and bandwidth advantages of sRIO switch fabrics to the 2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor-based embedded computing applications.
“The combination of four cores and doubling of floating point performance provided by the new Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions (Intel® AVX) instruction set is very exciting for our signal processing customers,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “With Intel’s Embedded Computing Division’s commitment to long life-cycle supply, these new processors will power a new generation of higher performance and power efficient radar and signal intelligence systems.”
“The new embedded Intel® Core™ i7-2715QE processor is ideal for advanced signal processing systems in the rugged deployed aerospace and defense market segment,” says Matt Langman, director of product marketing at the Intel Embedded Computing Division. ”Combined with Intel’s 7 year lifecycle commitment to embedded products, this high-performing, integrated processor gives our customers options for development of innovative and dependable long-term solutions.”
Available in a full range of air- and conduction-cooled configurations, the rugged CHAMP-AV8 combines the significantly improved floating-point performance of the Intel® CoreTM i7-2715QE processor with the substantial bandwidth and system-enabling features of the 6U OpenVPX form factor. The board’s pair of quad-core processors feature new Intel AVX floating-point instructions, and delivers unmatched performance, rated at up to 269 GFLOPS.
Supporting the DSP engine’s floating-point performance is a 21GB/s (peak) DDR3 memory sub-system that provides ample bandwidth to simultaneously serve CPU access and streaming I/O from its sRIO and PCIe interfaces.
The CHAMP-AV8 incorporates the enhancements of the OpenVPX (VITA 65) standard with a complete suite of data plane, expansion plane, and control plane interfaces. Supporting Gen2 SRIO and Gen2 PCIe interfaces, the CHAMP-AV8 offers triple the bandwidth of first generation VPX products with up to 32 GB/s of fabric performance, thus ensuring that application performance can scale commensurately with the much higher CPU performance.
The CHAMP-AV8 is the multi-processing component of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing’s High-Performance Embedded Computing (HPEC) solution set that also includes Xilinx® Virtex®-6 FPGA processing, FMC and XMC signal acquisition, SRIO switches, buffer memory and single board computers (SBC).
About the CHAMP-AV8
The CHAMP-AV8 multi-processing board brings the floating-point performance of the quad-core Intel® CoreTM i7-2715QE processor to the OpenVPX form factor standard. Utilizing a pair of processors, the CHAMP-AV8 delivers performance rated at up to 269 GFLOPs. With a 21GB/s (peak) DDR3 memory subsystem connected directly to the processor, the Intel® CoreTM i7-2715QE is able to maximize the throughput of its Intel AVX vector processing units and process larger vectors at peak rates significantly greater than was possible with previous AltiVec™-based systems.
The CHAMP-AV8 features a high-bandwidth PCI Express® (PCIe) architecture, with on-board PCIe connections between the processors and the XMC site. With 8GB of Flash and up to 16GB of SDRAM, the CHAMP-AV8 is designed for applications with demanding storage, data logging and sensor processing requirements.
