Future Agenda for Radio Technology Development Uncovered at SDR Forum Workshop

Boston, June 23, 2008 – On September 11, 2008, radio manufacturers, industry experts, venture capitalists and government representatives will assemble in Boston to explore requirements and anticipated trends in radio technology development over the next 5 years. The Software Defined Radio (SDR) Forum™ will bring together speakers from leading agencies and experts from around the world at the “Government and Industry R&D Agendas for Next Generation Radio Technologies” workshop.

In today’s world, research and development (R&D) into the advancement of radio technologies is a crucial tool to maintain state-of-the-art systems in the rapidly evolving communications environment. The ability to effectively map industry trends and government agendas enables key contributors such as manufacturers, developers and investors to support the future development of advanced systems across a variety of sectors, including commercial, defense, and public safety.

“This event brings together SDR Forum’s members and guests to gain insights into the future requirements and investment opportunities for radio technologies,” says Lee Pucker, CEO, SDR Forum. “This will help to drive technology and ensure beneficial advancements in the key areas defined by speakers, which can be supported by attendees and Forum members representing all levels of the value chain.”

The workshop will feature government speakers from agencies such as the Joint Program Executive Office (JPEO), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC), the European Defence Agency (EDA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), and venture capitalist, such as Battery Ventures. The event is aimed at providing global insight into the upcoming requirements for communication systems and working to shape the development of appropriate R&D activities to ensure joint success.

“Investment in research and development is key to addressing the critical mid-term needs of the commercial and civil communications markets,” says Murat Bicer, Senior Associate, Battery Ventures and member of the SDR Forum Board of Directors. “This workshop presents a unique opportunity to facilitate decisions on R& D expenditure through a comprehensive evaluation of market requirements.”

Speakers will address the potential and future trends for development in science and technology, advancements to support autonomous wireless communication systems, opportunities for RF and wireless technology developments, industry participation in government R&D, industry views on anticipated future needs for investment in R&D and more.

The day-long workshop will be held in conjunction with SDR Forum’s 60th General Meeting in Boston from September 8 – 11. Held quarterly, the meetings offer members and non-members with a forum to collaborate on the advancement of radio technologies. Planned working sessions will support commercial, public safety, avionics, and tactical radio communities.
