Karlsruhe, June 26, 2006. The unmanned aircraft (UAV) “Barracuda” from EADS Military Air Systems landed safely after its maiden flight in Spain. Barracuda operated fully automatically during the entire flight. Mission data was loaded into the UAV before the flight. High level instructions from the ground can be used to alter the mission.

Only the unique realtime Java technology from aicas makes the unrestricted use of the Java language in realtime and safety critical systems possible. The JamaicaVM is the only Java implementation with a realtime garbage collector, that is fully deterministic so that the effort for garbage collection can be determined in advance. The garbage collectors in other Java implementations can cause long pauses at inopportune times.

Before the Barracuda can be deployed outside the test field, its software must be certified to the aircraft safety standard DO-178b. The part of the system using the JamaicaVM must be certified to level C.

Further information about Barracuda can be found at www.eads.com.
