SYSGO & Freescale show avionics AFDX on QorIQ P2020

The industrial device SYSGO and Freescale will exhibit at the next Embedded World show is a Data Transfer Device (DTD) equipment designed to provide a mass storage function for an avionics systems. During on-flight operations, data are exchanged between on-board avionics systems and the DTD via different communication busses using ARINC 615A, TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol), FTP and NFS network protocols. A specific AFDX port has been implemented to connect the avionics equipment internal AFDX network.

The avionics equipment is based on Freescale’s QorIQ dual-core P2020 communications processor. The P2020 processor delivers high single-threaded performance per watt for a wide variety of applications in the networking, telecom, military and industrial markets. Its two Power Architecture cores deliver frequencies up to 1.2 GHz on a 45 nm technology low-power platform. In this avionics equipment one core of the P2020 runs ELinOS, the industrial embedded Linux product from SYSGO, and the other core is dedicated to an AFDX End-System, a DO-178B certifiable software-based technology from SYSGO.

“Freescale’s multi-core QorIQ product lines are ideally suited for safety- and security-critical applications, including the demanding requirements of the aerospace & defense,” said Glenn Beck, Aerospace & Defense/SBC Segment Manager at Freescale Semiconductor. “SYSGO offers an outstanding complementary portfolio for our QorIQ platforms with field-proven RTOSs and a unique software-based AFDX implementation that has already been DO-178B certified”.

The P2020 communications processor has an advanced set of features for ease of use. The integrated security engine supports common security algorithms used in networking and wireless applications, such as IPsec and Kasumi. The 64-bit memory controller offers future-proofing against memory technology migration with support for both DDR2 and DDR3. It also supports error correction codes, a baseline requirement for any high-reliability system. Other memory types such as flash are supported through the 16-bit local bus, USB, SD/MMC and Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI).

“Avionic Full-Duplex Switched Ethernet” (ARINC-664 Part7) is a deterministic aircraft data network bus system for public avionic transportation, railway and military systems. The network is based on standard IEEE802.3 Ethernet technology. The benefit of using commercial off-the shelf (COTS) Ethernet components is to lower overall costs for the aircraft network. Hardware components, cables and test equipment for Ethernet are field proven and much more affordable than the previously used avionics specific solutions. Ethernet itself won’t meet avionics network requirements. Therefore, AFDX implementations such as SYSGO’s portable AFDX solution extend the Ethernet standard by adding Quality of Service (QoS) and deterministic behavior with a guaranteed dedicated bandwidth. The AFDX avionics data network was first used in the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

“The collaboration with Freescale is very important to us”, said Jacques Brygier, VP Marketing at SYSGO. “We are impressed by their technology leadership in the domain of multi-core processors and we are confident that our combined solutions offer a true response to many avionics systems requirement and beyond.”

The equipment will be demonstrated at Embedded World in Nuremberg, Germany from February 28 to March 1 at Freescale’s, hall 4A, booth 309. Information on the demo will be also available on SYSGO’s booth in hall 5, booth 234.

About SYSGO

SYSGO provides operating system products, middleware, and software services for the real-time and embedded market. A differentiating capability of SYSGO is the SSV (Safe and Secure Virtualization) platform PikeOS, a paravirtualization operating system that is built upon a small, fast, and safe microkernel. It supports the co-existence of independent operating system personalities on a single platform, including ELinOS, SYSGO’s embedded Linux distribution. SYSGO supports international customers with services for embedded Linux, real-time capabilities and certification for safety-critical applications. Markets include Aerospace & Defense, Industrial Automation, Automotive, Transportation and Network Infrastructure. Customers include Airbus, EADS, Thales, B. Braun, Raytheon, Rheinmetall, Rockwell-Collins, Nokia Siemens Network, and Rohde & Schwarz. SYSGO has facilities in Germany, France, The Czech Republic and North America, and offers a global distribution and support network, including Europe and the Pacific Rim.
