ORBexpress Extends Support to Wind River’s VxWorks 6.9 RTOS with Improved Multicore Capability
HERNDON, VA – September 19, 2011 – Objective Interface Systems, Inc. (OIS), a global leader of high-performance communications middleware solutions, today announced that its ORBexpress® product now supports Wind River’s VxWorks 6.9 real-time operating system (RTOS) with Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) on multicore platforms.
Wind River’s VxWorks 6.9 platform features multicore support capabilities within the operating system, network stack, and development tools in order to deliver an easy migration path to multicore technology for embedded software developers. The VxWorks 6.9 release offers greater multicore processing performance in symmetric multiprocessing and asymmetrical multiprocessing configurations.
ORBexpress has a multi-threaded communications architecture that scales seamlessly in a multicore environment. Designed for real-time and embedded systems, ORBexpress is used by thousands of customers around the world and is proven reliable in systems where failure is not an option. The ORBexpress communications software fully supports multi-threading for achieving concurrency by making more efficient use of shared resources. By implementing ORBexpress on VxWorks 6.9 RTOS, developers can seamlessly move their application to a multicore environment without rewriting their code. ORBexpress supports VxWorks 6.9 on a variety of processors including the x86, ARM, PowerPC, and other processor families.
“We are excited about Wind River’s next generation multicore embedded operating system. Multicore is the new frontier of embedded systems and a majority of our customers indicate that future projects may use a multicore architecture. VxWorks 6.9 multicore support provides an excellent foundation for the built-in multicore architecture of ORBexpress,” said Joe Jacob, Senior Vice President at OIS. “This support for VxWorks 6.9 is a significant step in the ORBexpress platform for embedded developers around the world. As a standards-based communications infrastructure, developers will not need to rewrite their applications to achieve multicore capabilities.”
“OIS’s ORBexpress product, with its multi-threading features, provides an ideal framework for inter-process communications in a VxWorks multicore environment,” said Warren Kurisu, vice president of VxWorks product management at Wind River. “By using ORBexpress communications architecture, developers can shorten their development time while using a low-latency, secure, high-performance communication framework.”
