LynuxWorks Adds APIs for Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) to LynxOS-178

LynuxWorks, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, today announced the addition of API support of the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE™) Consortium’s Technical Standard for the LynxOS-178 v 2.2.2 real-time operating system (RTOS). The enabling of these APIs makes applications even more portable and reusable than ever before for the airborne computing environment used by the U.S. Navy and other military branches.

“The current FACE APIs are heavily based on the existing POSIX Standard, which plays well into LynuxWorks’ rich history of POSIX conformant software,” stated Robert Day, VP of Marketing for LynuxWorks, Inc. “LynxOS-178, the only time- and space-partitioned RTOS that has been awarded the FAA Reusable Software Component (RSC) certification and targets both the Intel x86 and PowerPC platforms, was quickly modified to enable over 340 APIs to satisfy the requirements defined within the newly released FACE Technical Standard.”

The FACE Consortium is hosted and managed by The Open Group and provides a vendor-neutral forum for industry and the U.S. government to work together to develop and consolidate the open standards, best practices, guidance documents and business models. The FACE Technical Standard defines the framework for creating a common operating environment to support applications across multiple Department of Defense avionics systems. The standard is designed to enhance the U.S. military aviation community’s ability to address issues of limited software reuse and accelerate and enhance war fighter capabilities, as well as enabling the community to take advantage of new technologies more rapidly and affordably.

“We are pleased and impressed that twenty Open Group FACE Consortium member organizations, including LynuxWorks, are already positioned to demonstrate products intended to align and become certified to The Open Group Standard once the certification program is available,” commented Judy Cerenzia, FACE Program Director of The Open Group. “One of the goals of FACE is software interoperability of portable applications and components. LynuxWorks’ active participation in the Consortium and efforts to align their products to The Open Group Standard will help us to achieve the goals of our initiative.”

Within the FACE Technical Standards, there are multiple profiles defined. LynxOS-178 covers 159 APIs for the FACE Security profile, 81 APIs for the FACE Safety profile, and 98 APIs for the FACE Security Extended profile. Additional profile coverage is expected as demand is created for other APIs.

The roadmap for LynuxWorks support of FACE includes DO-178 Level A artifact certification under the LynuxWorks Reusable Software Component (RSC) program. Binary libraries for these APIs are immediately available from LynuxWorks.

LynuxWorks will be conducting a demonstration of the utility of these APIs at the Future Airborne Capability Environment Exposition at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum in Virginia on June 5, 2012.

The FACE™ Consortium was formed in June 2010 as a government and industry partnership to define an open avionics environment for all military airborne platform types. Today, it is an aviation-focused professional group made up of industry suppliers, customers and users. It provides a vendor-neutral forum for industry and government to work together to develop and consolidate the open standards, best practices, guidance documents and business models necessary to result in:

• Standardized approaches for using open standards within avionics systems

• Lower implementation costs of FACE™ systems

• Standards that support a robust architecture and enable quality software development

• The use of standard interfaces that will lead to reuse of capabilities

• Portability of applications across multiple FACE™ systems and vendors

• Procurement of FACE™ conformant products

• More capabilities reaching the Warfighter faster

• Innovation and competition within the avionics industry
