MILCOM 2009 – BOSTON, MA – October 18, 2009, — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX and CompactPCI products and systems for the aerospace and defense market, and Hybricon, a leading supplier of innovative Systems Packaging for Rugged Embedded Computing solutions serving the military, aerospace, homeland security, medical and high-end industrial markets, today demonstrated the industry’s first live OpenVPX™ system. The demonstration system, shown at the MILCOM 2009 Conference, featured an OpenVPX backplane in a Hybricon SFF-4 Small Form Factor conduction cooled chassis integrated with Curtiss-Wright Controls’ small form factor 3U OpenVPX-compliant cards, including single board computers, expansion carrier cards, and graphics controller OpenVPX-compliant boards. The initial SFF-4 product is designed to support I/O for airborne and ground vehicle control applications, supporting I/O for Ethernet, serial, video, and 1553 or CANBUS. Different I/O complements can easily be supported with different backplane.
“Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing has taken a leadership position in the development of the VPX and OpenVPX specifications and we plan to offer the market the most comprehensive mix of board and subsystem solutions based on these groundbreaking new standards,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “Our VPX6-185 was the industry’s first VPX SBC, our CHAMP-AV6 was the industry’s first 6U VPX DSP engine, and our VPX6-1952 was one of the first VPX products selected for a major military program. We were also the first to publically demonstrate a working VPX system. We are proud to continue this leadership with support for OpenVPX, many of our existing products today are ‘OpenVPX Ready’.”
“Hybricon’s Mil/Aero customer’s demand an advanced level of interoperability in their high performance VPX applications. The OpenVPX (Vita 65) Specification was developed to meet these needs,” said Neil Peterson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing of Hybricon Corporation. “As with VPX and other standards, Hybricon took a leading role in the development and marketing of the OpenVPX specification which allows our customers to expect full support for OpenVPX by Hybricon”.
Curtiss-Wright Controls offers a comprehensive family of boards and fully integrated PCOTS (Packaged COTS) systems that support OpenVPX, including one through five-slot 3U and one through eighteen slot 6U platforms. PCOTS systems feature low NRE, interoperability certified, rugged, qualified, application-ready system products that highly leverage Curtiss-Wright Controls’ COTS technology.
Hybricon’s SFF-4 chassis is the first in a family of products and is designed for rugged environments for airborne and ground mobile applications. It provides support for the first industry available OpenVPX backplane and features extended temperature and shock & vibration tolerance. It is designed for use in MIL-STD-704F aircraft and MIL-STD-1275B vehicles. It currently supports a 4-slot OpenVPX VPX REDI 1” pitch backplane with a 6-slot SFF-6 version coming soon. These platforms can be tailored to meet specific customer requirements.
About OpenVPX
OpenVPX defines the VPX Systems Specification, an architecture that manages and constrains module and backplane designs. The VPX Systems Specification includes the definition of pin-outs and sets interoperability points within VPX while maintaining full compliance with the existing VPX specification. OpenVPX, developed by VITA members working together outside of VITA, was introduced into the VITA Standards Organization (VSO) in October 2009 as VITA 65 for final comment, ballot, and ratification as a standard.

About VPX
VPX is an ANSI standard (ANSI/VITA 46.0-2007) defined by the VME bus International Trade Association (VITA). The VPX standard was developed to define a new generation of computing systems that will utilizes high-performance switch fabrics over a new high-speed connector, as well as operating in harsh environments.
