ASHBURN, VA – November 14, 2012 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions (CWCDS), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls, has introduced the new XMC-715 graphics controller mezzanine card, a highly reliable display controller that redefines ease of use with unprecedented simplicity of design and software driver support. Based on the AMD Radeon™ E4690 Graphics Processor Unit (GPU), the XMC-715 boosts reliability while slashing complexity with an elegant minimal design that comprises the GPU, power supply circuitry and memory. Its dual independent graphics output channels support all popular video interfaces from PAL/NTSC interlaced analog formats to high resolution dual-link DVI. The rugged XMC (ANSI-VITA 42.3) card speeds and simplifies the integration of high performance graphics processing for demanding applications such as moving maps, mission computer displays, helmet mounted displays, and heads-up displays in deployed air, ground and base station platforms. Delivering maximum ease of use and integration, the new high performance display controller is ideal for use in SWaP-constrained defense and aerospace applications that demand high-performance, high reliability in a lightweight, low power, small form factor solution.

Rugged, Highly Reliable Graphics

The XMC-715, which is designed to deliver optimal performance over the full military operating temperature range, is the first rugged COTS graphics controller to eliminate the need for a Run Time License from a third-party, which results in lowered cost and logistical complexity. Adding to its simplicity, the card’s integrated video interfaces require no external transmitters or op-amps. Furthermore, the card is the Military COTS market’s first lead-free graphics card.

For applications that demand safety certification, Curtiss-Wright offers DO-178B/C drivers and a DO-254 kit for the GPU. Curtiss-Wright also plans to announce a variant of the XMC-715, with support for next generation VITA-61 rugged XMC connectors for improved signal integrity and reliability.

The XMC-715’s Radeon E4690 GPU is a multi-chip module with 512MB of dedicated video memory integrated directly to the GPU through a 128-bit DDR3 memory interface. It supports an 8-lane PCIe Gen 2.0 host interface and can automatically operate at 1-lane, 2-lanes, 4-lanes or 8-lanes depending upon the capabilities of the host board. The card’s high bandwidth support enables large amounts of video data to be transferred quickly supporting applications such as high resolution moving map displays. The module’s GPU also provides an on-chip Universal Video Decoder (UVD2) for decoding H.264, VC1 and MPEG2 streams.

Complete System Solutions

In addition to interoperability with Curtiss-Wright’s wide range of Intel® and Power® Architecture-based VME and VPX Single Board Computers, such as the VME-186, VPX6-187, VME-194, VPX6-1957, and VME-1905, the XMC-715 is graphics controller is also ideal for use in conjunction with our XMC-270 Video Frame Grabber module. The XMC-270 can capture multiple channels of video and when combined with the XMC-715 provides a high performance full bandwidth video capture and display solution such as a 360 degree situational awareness application.

Software Support

Software support for the XMC-715 includes graphic driver software for Windows or Linux on an Intel platform with AMD’s Catalyst graphics driver. The XMC-715 operates seamlessly with Windows XP, Windows XP Embedded, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Linux (x86), Windows DirectX 10.1 and Windows OpenGL 3.3.

For Real Time Operating System (RTOS) and Power Architecture driver support on Wind River VxWorks, Wind River VxWorks 653, Green Hills Software Integrity, Green Hills Software Integrity-178, DDCI DEOS and other operating environments Curtiss-Wright resells the Core Avionics and Industrial (CoreAVI) Radeon E4690 driver solutions and provides direct customer support. Drivers are available for OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL 1.3, and OpenGL SC 1.0.
