PERC Ultra addresses growing market demand for security-oriented multi-partitioning

San Jose, CA, March 31, 2009 —Aonix®, the provider of the PERC product line for embedded and real-time Java developers, announced the start of its integration efforts to Wind River’s VxWorks MILS Platform for multilevel secure (MLS) systems with its flagship product PERC Ultra. This integrated product will help customers address the growing requirement by industry and government scalable, portable, and maintainable tools and execution environments that can handle the special needs and rigor associated with access to and protection of secure data in MLS systems.

“Partitioned secure systems using the MILS (multiple independent levels of security) architectures are a growing requirement for global military communication systems,” said Gary Cato, Director of Marketing at Aonix. “Integrating support for our PERC Ultra virtual machine into an industry-leading MILS environment will enable Aonix to deliver the industry’s most rigorous Java solution for MLS systems.”

PERC Ultra running atop VxWorks MILS has been requested by a joint customer in the Aerospace & Defense segment for use in an internal R&D project. The platform will prove viability of the separation kernel when used with a Java application using the MILS-based virtual machine technology. Additionally, Data Distribution Services (DDS) provided by Real-Time Innovations (RTI) will be used as a middleware layer in the same platform.

“MILS plays an important role in our strategic direction,” notes Rob Hoffman, vice president and general manager, Aerospace and Defense Industry, Wind River. “Proliferation of the Internet and threat of virtual attacks, both commercial and military, have escalated the urgency for usable, cost-effective secure computing. These systems tend to be complex and long lived making products like PERC Ultra critical to the success of our joint customers. This integration will enable our customers to rapidly develop and deploy their secure applications.”

The port of PERC Ultra to VxWorks MILS complements Aonix’s participation in the TECOM project, a European Community initiative to address trusted computing. The TECOM project is an Information Software Technology Project, which is co-financed by the European Commission under EU Framework Programme 7. The consortium of the TECOM project consists of 11 European partners from industry and academia including AMTEC, Aonix, Eads Defense & Security, Infineon, Mixed Mode, Sirrix, SYSGO, Technikon, Trango, Trusted Logic and the University of Dresden. This consortium will develop trusted computing solutions for embedded platforms.

About the PERC Family

PERC Ultra is a virtual machine and toolset expressly created for demanding embedded and real-time systems requiring J2SE™ support. PERC Ultra delivers the ease and efficiency of Java™ Standard Edition support without sacrificing integrity, performance, or real-time behavior. The currently available version, PERC Ultra 5.1 offers Ahead-of-Time (AOT) and Just-in-Time (JIT) compilation, remote debug support, deterministic garbage collection, standard graphics and extended commercial RTOS support.

PERC Pico, the first development environment geared toward the creation of resource constrained and deeply embedded hard real-time applications and components, is based on the emerging Java Specification Request (JSR-302) for development of hard real-time safety-critical code. PERC Pico allows Java developers to write low-level Java code such as device drivers and interrupt handlers, telecommunications control plane, and signal processing for multimedia. It offers a memory footprint measured in hundreds of kilobytes in comparison to the tens of megabytes required for other Java solutions as well as boasting performance, latency, and determinism comparable to C.

Shipping and Availability

PERC Ultra for VxWorks MILS is scheduled for early adopter delivery in Q2 2009 with general product release expected in Q3 2009. PERC development tools are available at no charge in combination with a maintenance contract. Target execution and deployment license pricing starts at $25K based on projected volume. PERC Ultra is also available with special bundling discounts when licensed together with PERC Pico.
