ASHBURN, Va. – Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that its Defense Solutions division has launched a new family of DO-254 DAL C and DO-178C DAL C safety certifiable standard commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) processing modules designed for use in military and civil aerospace applications. An alternative to more costly custom designs, Curtiss-Wright’s Safety Certifiable COTS Modules provide the reduced cost and development risk benefits of COTS electronics to designers of safety-certifiable systems. The comprehensive family of select DO-254 DAL C and DO-178C DAL C certifiable products feature the design artifact packages required to support successful certification of the customer’s system. Use of Safety Certifiable COTS Modules will speed and significantly reduce the cost of developing critical aviation applications on manned and unmanned platforms. The first members of the product family to be announced are the VPX3-150 3U VPX single board computer (SBC) and VPX3-718 3U VPX graphics card.

“Today, the FAA demands that electronics suppliers for civil aviation, and increasingly for military aircraft, certify their system solutions to strict safety certification standards,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense Solutions division. “Our Safety Certifiable COTS Module solutions, supported with comprehensive DO-254 and DO-178 data artifact packages, provide a cost-effective alternative to custom designs and speed the deployment of system-level aviation subsystems.”

First Safety Certifiable COTS Module Solutions

Curtiss-Wright has launched its new family of Safety Certifiable COTS Modules with the introduction of two new SWaP-C (space/weight/power/cost)-optimized COTS modules, the VPX3-150 single board computer (SBC) and the VPX3-718 graphics display module. Both modules are rugged and compact, small-form factor 3U VPX modules. They are designed using a development process that results in a DO-254 Design Assurance Level (DAL) C certifiable product and supporting artifacts.

Legacy of Safety Certifiable Experience

The new Safety Certifiable COTS Module family builds on Curtiss-Wright’s legacy experience spanning over 25 years as a supplier of safety certifiable electronics to the commercial and defense aviation industry, including the first data crash recorders, air data modules, data concentrators for avionics upgrades and fully integrated rugged processing subsystems.
