AUSTIN, Texas – BigLever Software, the leading provider of Systems and Software Product Line Engineering (PLE) solutions, today announced that the U.S. Army’s Live Training Transformation (LT2) product line was inducted into the Software Product Line Hall of Fame at the 18th International Software Product Line Conference (SPLC). The LT2 product line employs the latest generation of PLE methods and tools provided by BigLever Software and General Dynamics C4 Systems. With its induction into the Hall of Fame, the LT2 product line earns the highest achievement in the PLE field.
In 2010, BigLever Software teamed with General Dynamics C4 Systems to win the Consolidated Product-Line Management (CPM) contract from the U.S. Army’s Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) for consolidating the massive LT2 product line, which represents a $50 billion investment in state-of-the-art combat training. The goal of the CPM contract was to streamline the process for rapidly adapting training systems and equipment to changing missions and threats. Recognized as a “Best of the Best” model for the PLE industry, LT2’s PLE approach has delivered more than $570M in cost savings to the U.S. Army to date, with more than 150 training ranges worldwide that scale from individual soldiers to full brigades participating in live force-on-force and force-on-target training.
“In a budget-constrained environment, the collaboration among the Army, General Dynamics and our program teammates is achieving significant cost savings and efficiency in one of the most important investments that the Army makes, training soldiers to be mission-ready, anytime, everywhere,” said Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems.
SPLC, recently held in Florence Italy, is the premier forum for practitioners, researchers and educators to present and discuss the most recent ideas, innovations, trends, and experiences in product line engineering. The Hall of Fame was created to recognize distinguished members of the community and to further PLE practice by spotlighting the best examples of excellence in the field. Previous SPLC Hall of Fame inductees include BigLever customers HomeAway (2009 inductee), NetApp (previously LSI Logic, 2006 inductee) and Salion (2004 inductee).
“As an early adopter of the PLE approach, with more than a decade of in-depth experience, the LT2 Product Line and its induction into the Hall of Fame serve as an inspiration to others looking to leverage the dramatic benefits of PLE. General Dynamics C4 Systems was a key catalyst for this award by continually instilling leading-edge PLE innovations into the LT2 program,” said Dr. Charles Krueger, BigLever Software CEO.
As the prime contractor, General Dynamics C4 Systems works closely with BigLever Software to facilitate the continued evolution of the LT2 product line, employing the latest PLE innovations. This PLE approach leverages BigLever’s new generation PLE methods and industry-standard Gears solution to create a single, automated production system – much like a manufacturing factory – that utilizes product feature profiles to automatically assemble and configure the systems and software assets needed to produce the entire product line. This enables the rapid deployment of new refinements, variations and enhancements to the LT2 product line with much greater efficiency, and significantly reduced cost.
