HILLSBORO, OR, U.S. – November 15, 2011 – Radisys® Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), a leading provider of embedded wireless infrastructure solutions, today announced new features and capabilities for the industry’s highest capacity, highest performing security gateway. The latest software release for the award-winning SEG-100, a security gateway module, delivers turnkey Tunnel Terminating Gateway (TTG) and Interworking Wireless LAN (I-WLAN) functionality for network equipment providers. Equipment manufacturers can now add incremental revenue, by extending deployed infrastructure, and meet the evolving requirements for carriers.
Mobile carriers are increasingly leveraging Wi-Fi networks to lower their costs by offloading traffic and providing improved connectivity for their customers. Offloading of traffic to Wi-Fi helps the use of unlicensed spectrum, thus lowering the cost per bit for the carrier. However, without a dedicated offload solution from their equipment provider, such as a 3GPP standards-based TTG, the connection between the carrier’s network and a Wi-Fi network are often “untrusted” and are not secure. The enhanced SEG-100 provides the secure solution that carriers need.
“Carriers are looking for highly scalable and cost effective solutions to protect networks and mobile traffic,” said Jeff Sharpe, senior product line manager at Radisys. “Compared to enterprise-class security offerings, the SEG-100 is a carrier-class solution that supports an industry-best 200,000 concurrent, bidirectional IPSec tunnels running at speeds greater than 10Gbps on a stateful, high availability system, thus enabling lowest cost per subscriber.”
Previously, network equipment providers have created their own TTG capabilities or integrated a standalone TTG box into their environment. As a built-in hardware appliance module, industry standard ATCA blade, the SEG-100 represents the only turnkey TTG and I-WLAN solution that can be easily integrated into any ATCA chassis or network, or a standalone Security Gateway in a scalable ATCA chassis. Such flexibility enables equipment providers to exploit their installed base, especially if it is ATCA based.
“The SEG-100 helps network equipment providers reduce the time, cost and risk of TTG in I-WLAN development,” said Sharpe. “And because it’s reusable as networks scale from 2G to 3G to 4G LTE, it protects their security gateway investment well into the future.”
An I-WLAN is a wireless data access solution that allows data traffic to flow between wireless local area networks (WLANs) and the operator’s 3GPP systems. Mobile clients, such as laptops, smartphones and tablets, use the WLAN to access the Internet. Radisys’ SEG-100 can allow these clients to access the Internet by providing interworking to an existing general packet radio service (GPRS) backbone.
“Critical security capabilities like the IPSec protocol are becoming increasingly important for securing 2G and 3G femtocell and Wi-Fi traffic, as well as LTE traffic originating in both small cell and macro-cellular domains,” said Patrick Donegan, senior analyst, Heavy Reading. “With the rise in mobile broadband connections, traffic types and traffic volumes, we are seeing strong demand for 3GPP-defined Security Gateways (SEGs) to mitigate the increasing threats to which the mobile network is being exposed.”
The SEG-100’s TTG and I-WLAN capabilities add to Radisys’ already feature-rich security gateway solution. Now network equipment providers can offer their mobile carrier customers a multitude of security services on a single blade, including LTE network domain security, firewall and an evolutionary path to supporting evolved packet data gateway (ePDG) technologies. Easily integrated into an existing ATCA chassis or environment, the SEG-100 also offers a variety of input/output (I/O) connection options, from front-end Ethernet ports to backplane fabric switches and Rear Transition Modules (RTMs). The TTG/I-WLAN capability can also be extended to be an ePDG for emerging LTE networks. This product is currently in customer trials.
