L-3 WESCAM announced that it has received an order from CAE Aviation, an internationally recognized integrator and service provider, for one MX™-15 electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) imaging system. WESCAM’s long-range imaging system is being utilized by the Republic of Seychelles onboard a Twin Otter airborne platform in support of maritime surveillance, fisheries protection and anti-piracy missions.
“With an increasing risk of illegal and pirate activity in surrounding waters, the Seychelles People’s Defence Forces had an urgent need for surveillance equipment with proven operational capability for day, night and extreme weather conditions,” said Paul Jennison, vice president of sales and business development for L-3 WESCAM. “Together WESCAM and CAE created and delivered a fully-integrated surveillance solution to counter these increasing threats.”
The MX-15 imaging system is configured with a large format thermal imager, daylight spotter and zoom TV, and lowlight spotter TV. The system is also fully equipped with a wide-angle laser illuminator, which allows for long-range subject identification in total darkness.
A key component of the specific solution requested by CAE for anti-piracy missions was the need to track subjects of interest with ease. The MX-15 solution met these requirements with its accurate GEO-Pointing and GEO-Focus technologies. These tools encourage hands-off operation, as the system locks all sensors on a precise subject, identified by a specific latitude and longitude position. The turret then follows this subject, regardless of aircraft movement or obstructions within its line-of-sight. GEO-Focus technology ensures correct focus at all times, even when alternating between sensors. These two features combine to reduce operator fatigue and allow analysts to stay in-flight for prolonged periods to counter piracy activity.
