Ballard Technology, Inc., has introduced the MPR-ES-1, a new 10-port managed/ unmanaged Ethernet switch PMC for embedded use in the aerospace and defense industries. This rugged COTS switch features advanced management functions, health monitoring, on-board magnetics, and an integrated Ethernet controller (NIC). It is suitable for both conduction and convection (air) cooled systems.
The MPR-ES-1 Ethernet switch includes two Gigabit ports and eight 10/100 Mbps ports. One Gigabit port routes directly to the integrated Ethernet controller and provides the host computer with a direct connection to the switch for easy system expansion. The second Gigabit port can act either as a straight 1GB path for the host single board computer, as a high-speed uplink to other switches, or as a standard 10/100/1000 Mbps port. The CCPMC form factor allows easy integration with modern embedded computers, including VME, VME-64, cPCI, and VPX systems.
“Ballard’s Ethernet switch PMC is a cost-effective way to expand new or installed systems.” said Bill Schuh, Vice President of Sales for Ballard Technology. “As an unmanaged switch, installation is quick and easy, without the need for drivers or software. In managed operation, you can control complex switch operations and gather detailed statistical data. The switch allows you to pack more functionality into your current system.”
The MPR-ES-1 combines an advanced Marvell® switch controller with on-board magnetics for high performance and reliable operation. It provides IEEE 802.1X MAC-based authentication and support for up to 8K MAC address entries with automatic learning and aging. Management functions include VLAN, QOS and ingress/egress limiting. In addition, the switch includes health monitoring and diagnostic features such as Built-in Test (BIT), temperature monitoring, port mirroring and Virtual Cable Tester™. Low power consumption and high MTBF ratings make the MPR-ES-1 an ideal choice for rugged, high-availability systems.
Typical applications for the MPR-ES-1 include high reliability, high throughput switching, network bridging, red/black network segmentation, VoIP, digital video, and more. It can also reduce system SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) by eliminating the need for a separate switch box.
