CHELMSFORD, Mass., Oct. 18 — Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY), announced that it has joined the board of directors of VITA, the governing body of the VMEbus International Trade Association. The Company is also continuing its extensive involvement in the standards working groups that are actively renewing the VMEbus architecture and ecosystem and advocating commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions for existing and emerging market applications. Since 1994 and the ANSI/VITA-5 1994 RACEway Interlink Standard, Mercury has remained committed to shaping industry standards in embedded computing, with significant technical contributions to the VSO.

“The VME standard is the system infrastructure cornerstone of the defense and aerospace markets; it supports commercial off-the-shelf systems that are leading edge, tough, and flexible,” said Barry Isenstein, vice president and general manager of the Defense business at Mercury. “We have entered a period of rapid technology change, and the pace of VME evolution has to increase to bring this technology to the users. As an innovator in embedded processing, we are expanding our leadership role in that evolution by joining the VITA board of directors.”

Mercury personnel are making vital contributions to eight distinct VITA committees that are focused on standardizing implementations for a specific technology frontier. An accepted standard means that products from different technology vendors will work together, so that defense OEMs can create cost-effective, maintainable, and upgradeable systems.

Accredited as an American National Standards developer, the VITA Standards Organization provides its members with the ability to develop and to promote open technology standards. The VSO has created more than 30 standards in the past 10 years that promote open technology systems; all the VSO standards are extensions of or related to the original VMEbus standard of 1981. In military embedded computing applications, VME is the most widely used open standard in existence.

“Mercury is a big part of the success enabled by VME-based systems in embedded defense applications,” said Ray Alderman, executive director of VITA. “Mercury engineers have consistently contributed their expertise to the development of VITA specifications. I’m very pleased to welcome Mercury to the VITA board.”
