ARTiSAN Software Tools, a global leader for UML 2 and SysML-based real-time systems and software modelling tools, has announced that Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has selected ARTiSAN Studio for the development of safety critical embedded software needed to control its innovative products, systems and factory-wide complete solutions.
“We were drawn to ARTiSAN Studio by its support of UML 2.0 and its reputation in safety critical markets,” said Peter Weichhold, a senior software engineer at Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D). “All of our product development follows IEC61508, the European standard for safety-critical systems. Maintaining Safety Integrity Level 3 is crucial to us. In our current project, for example, it is essential to integrate several safety-critical bus systems like the AS Interface Safety At Work and PROFIsafe with a PLC based on SIMATIC S7 using the SIMATIC IDE and Siemens Safety Integrated. Using ARTiSAN Studio, we are able to meet and exceed our safety-critical requirements.”
Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) were particularly impressed by the adaptability of the document generation features in ARTiSAN Studio which supports the product certification process by automatically generating the right documents from the UML models. “This enhances the communication between the developers and the TÜV certification offices a lot,” continued Peter Weichhold. “Since our current development project has teams on multiple sites, the ability to share and exchange modelling information in ARTiSAN Studio helps the teams to co-operate in a very efficient way.”
Commenting on Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) decision to select ARTiSAN Studio, Christiane Kapteina, ARTiSAN’s Sales Manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland said: “With technologies in the automation world becoming increasingly enmeshed, solutions need to make lasting improvements to productivity and economic viability. ARTiSAN Studio was particularly chosen for its ability to help Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) seamlessly and easily meet the safety critical parameters mandated for its solutions as well as efficiently support its collaborative development strategy for embedded software development which ARTiSAN Studio’s true multi-user repository facilitates extremely well.”
