PISCATAWAY, N.J., May 19, 2008 – Power.org the open organization that develops and promotes Power Architecture™ technology, today announced that industry expert Ray Bryant has been named Chairman of the Board. Mr. Bryant is respected within the Power Architecture™ community for his technical and market experience working with Power Architecture™ cores and systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) at IBM. Power.org also welcomed three new corporate members to the organization, CoWare, Curtiss-Wright Corporation, and Green Hills Software.
“The Power Architecture technology platform is growing faster than ever and across a growing breadth of markets and applications,” said Mr. Bryant. “This growth is driven in part by Power.org, whose work in creating technology standards is making the Power Architecture platform simpler to connect to and easier to use. Power.orgs standards-setting activities continue to attract more and more companies, which in turn accelerates the rate of progress we can make.”
The Power Architecture™ processing platform grew at a significantly higher rate than comparable embedded processor architectures and is positioned to grow faster than the industry average through 2011, according to a custom research report commissioned by Power.org from IDC. The report finds Power Architecture chips and shipments exceeded industry averages by 20% and 12% respectively and is expected to continue at 13.8% CAGR in embedded processors unit shipments and 10.4% CAGR in revenue through 2011.
Power Architecture technology is especially well adapted to deal with changes in the market and to business priorities. The ecosystem supports a wide range of flexible solutions from licensable cores to standard products. Reference platforms and full product designs can be selectively pulled in and adapted to specific applications. Versatility and a strong systems orientation are hallmarks of the architecture as seen in the community-centered business model and the organization that has developed around it, Power.org.
Mr. Bryant is the director of Games and Power Solutions within the Microelectronics Brand in IBMs Systems and Technology Group. He joined IBM in 1980 and has held a variety of positions across the Microelectronics Division and the Technology Group in IBM, including manager of Process Development, manager of System Quality Assurance, Design/Groundrules Manager, director of Worldwide Packaging Applications, and director of Emerging Product and Foundry Sales.
In early 2006 Mr. Bryant was named director of Asia Pacific Delivery for IBM Global Engineering Solutions, where he was responsible for the chip, system, and software design and development teams in Japan, China, and India. Prior to that, he was responsible for business management of IBMs 4xx/7xx/9xx product families and the design of embedded 4xx processors as director of PowerPC products. Mr. Bryant also worked as director of consumer applications in Tokyo, where he developed digital media business for the semiconductor products OEM brand within IBMs Systems and Technology Group.
Ecosystem Growth
The Power.org™ ecosystem continues to grow, with the newest members CoWare, Curtiss-Wright Corporation and Green Hills Software bringing valuable expertise and perspective to the organization.
“CoWare, Curtiss-Wright and Green Hills Software exemplify the type of companies drawn to Power.org,” said Fawzi Behmann, marketing committee chair for Power.org. “These companies clearly recognize the value of community-developed standards for Power Architecture technology in areas such as virtual development and modeling environments, debug interfaces and hypervisors – all of which are key to addressing the critical challenge of delivering higher performance for next-generation systems.”
CoWare is a global supplier of platform-driven electronic system-level (ESL) design software and services. CoWare solutions solve the new design challenges associated with platform architecture design, platform verification, application sub-system design, processor design, DSP algorithm design, and software development, and are based on open industry standards including SystemC.
“We are seeing an increased demand for PowerPC-based solutions for architecture design and software development,” said Tom De Schutter, marketing manager, IP and third party relationships, CoWare. “By joining Power.org we are helping increase the ecosystem for our customers using CoWares ESL 2.0 offerings. CoWare will participate in the Power.org virtual platforms technical subcommittee to help leverage existing standards to enable PowerPC IP vendors to provide SystemC TLM processor models that can be used in ESL tools to address architecture design and software development issues that customers are facing.”
Curtiss-Wright Corporation designs, manufactures and overhauls products for motion control and flow control applications and provides a variety of metal treatment services.
Founded in 1982, Green Hills Software is the technology leader in device software optimization (DSO) and real-time operating systems (RTOS) for 32- and 64-bit embedded systems.
“Green Hills has been deeply involved with Power Architecture technology since the early 1990s, and is eager to take an active role in the great work Power.org is doing to promote standards that are easy to adopt by software and tool vendors, and that lower the total cost of development,” said Robert Redfield, director business development at Green Hills Software. “The advanced work this organization is doing on hypervisor and virtualization can serve as a preeminent guide as vendors work to accelerate their multicore support.”
