New CHAMP-AV5 6U VME DSP Engine Brings Latest Dual-Core Intel® Core™ i7 Processor to Demanding Military Signal Processing Applications
LEESBURG, VA – January 7, 2010 — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, OpenVPX™, VXS and CompactPCI products for the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) market, has introduced its first high performance VME64x DSP (Digital Signal Processing) engine utilizing the new dual-core Intel® Core™ i7-610E processor. The new CHAMP-AV5 is Curtiss-Wright Controls’ first DSP engine with the new Intel® Core™ i7 processor, representing an industry milestone in bringing the low-power/high-performance advantages of Intel processor technology to demanding military signal processing applications.
The CHAMP-AV5 complements Curtiss-Wright Controls’ new SVME/DMV-1905 single board computer, also based on the Intel® Core™ i7 processor. As a board set these two cards represent an industry milestone in bringing the myriad advantages of Intel processor technology to the rugged deployed COTS signal processing space.

About the CHAMP-AV5
The CHAMP-AV5 multi-processing board brings the floating-point performance of the Intel® Core i7 architecture to the VME64x form factor standard. Utilizing a pair of 2.53GHz dual-core Core i7 processors, the CHAMP-AV5 delivers performance rated up to 81 GFLOPs. With a 17GB/s (peak) DDR3 memory subsystem connected directly to the processor, the Core i7 is able to maximize the throughput of its SSE 4.2 vector processing units. With 4Mbytes of cache and two hardware threads per core, the Core i7 processor can process larger vectors at peak rates significantly greater than was possible with previous AltiVec™-based systems.
The CHAMP-AV5 is pin-compatible with the Curtiss-Wright Controls’ MPC7447/7448-based CHAMP-AV4, which enables performance upgrades without the requiring changing the chassis, backplane, or power supplies of existing qualified systems.
The CHAMP-AV5 features a high-bandwidth PCI Express® (PCIe) architecture, with on-board PCIe connections between the processors and the PMC/XMC sites. With 8GB of Flash and 4GB of SDRAM, the CHAMP-AV5 is designed for applications with demanding storage, data logging and sensor processing requirements.
Extensive Software Support
The CHAMP-AV5 is supported with an extensive suite of software including support for Wind River VxWorks and Linux operating environments. Additional software support includes Inter-processor communications (IPC) and Curtiss-Wright Controls’ Continuum Vector SSE-optimized signal processing library.
