GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms, a unit of GE Enterprise Solutions, announced that it had signed an agreement with SprayCool (formerly Isothermal Systems Research) of Liberty Lake, Washington. The agreement enables GE Fanuc to act as a supplier of fully integrated subsystems that include GE Fanucs COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) embedded computing solutions within a SprayCool chassis.
SprayCools direct-spray liquid cooling technology can be applied to COTS board level assemblies. It is already field proven in ground vehicle applications such as the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV), air applications such as U-2 and has been selected for us on UAV platforms such as Predator, Warrior and Global Hawk.
“As embedded computing systems in military and aerospace applications become increasingly powerful, the amount of heat they dissipate also increases – creating a real challenge to cool them sufficiently to ensure reliable operation,” said Peter Cavill, general Manager, Military & Aerospace Business at GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms. “This agreement allows us to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the SprayCool chassis and extend our product offering to serve the needs of customers requiring very high performance subsystem solutions from a single source.”
The SprayCool chassis technology provides GE Fanuc with distinct advantages:
* Uses a patented phase change spray cooling technique supporting up to 500 watts per card slot and targets large, high power, configurations as typically found in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), SIGINT (signals intelligence), C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, & Intelligence) and similar applications.
* Decouples internal board level components from the harsh external environment normally found in military and aerospace applications, allowing the use of rugged “conduction cooled” and less rugged “air cooled” boards.
* By supporting high power dissipation levels, allows multiple subsystems to be integrated into the same chassis, saving both space and weight.
“We are very excited about working with GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms.” said Matt Gerber, CEO and President of SprayCool. “By taking advantage of SprayCools platform capabilities GE Fanuc will be able to offer its customers a whole new class of embedded computing system solutions.” he added.
SprayCools patented 2-phase liquid cooling technology uses a fine mist of non-corrosive, non-conductive liquid, sprayed in a thin layer, which evaporates and cools electronics. The process continuously cycles within a sealed, closed loop system. In doing so, SprayCool products isolate the electronics from dirty, corrosive environments found in military and industrial applications resulting in cooler, higher performance, and more durable electronic devices.
