DAYTON, OH – March 24, 2010 — Curtiss-Wright Controls Electronic Systems, a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed subsystems for the aerospace and defense market, has introduced the new Vortex VR-6511S8, a 6U VXS (VITA 41) multi-channel data recorder with solid state drives. This recording engine board features a Power® Architecture processor and a Xilinx® FPGA, and supports up to eight (8) SATA controllers that can be striped together to create a high-speed rugged data recording system. The VR-6511S8 enables system designers to easily and rapidly integrate a rugged COTS data recorder system into rugged deployed applications such as radar, sonar and image processing. The Vortex VR-6511S8 is the newest member of Curtiss-Wright Controls’ Vortex family of storage systems designed to support demanding military applications including instrumentation recording, mission recording, SIGINT/ELINT recording in both rugged and lab environments.
“The Vortex VR-6511S8 is designed for the most demanding I/O intensive embedded military systems,” said David Dietz, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Electronic Systems. “This rugged board’s compact design and the connectivity to solid state drives provides a COTS multi-channel data recorder system that can be easily and quickly deployed in harsh environments.”
The on-board Xilinx® Virtex®-5 SX95T FPGA is supported with 512MB of local SDRAM and provides eight (8) high-speed serial links to the VXS P0 connector. These high speed serial links are used for up to eight (8) SATA controllers, connected one (1) disk per P0 high-speed serial link. The SATA controllers can be striped together to provide a high-speed rugged storage system. The Vortex VR-6511S8 is designed for use with Curtiss-Wright Controls’ VXS-4SSD VXS SATA Disk Carriers, which provide 4 SATA drives per 6U slot. With available drives, the recording system can support up to 4 TB in 3 VXS slots using rotating drives or up to 2 TB in 3 VXS slots using solid state drives.
For system expansion, the Vortex VR-6511S8 provides two (2) PMC/XMC mezzanine sites that support a wide variety of I/O such as sFPDP, Gigabit Ethernet, 10GbE, and analog I/O.
Vortex Software
The Vortex VR-6511S8 is supported with comprehensive software that enables data to be manipulated or analyzed while being recorded or during playback. The Customer Programmable Recorder software application provides full access to a well-defined and fully documented interface to the data before it is written to or read from the disk. The board’s XMLRPC API enables complete control of the system by the customer’s application, including the number of channels to acquire, disk grouping, playback from offsets in the recording, and disk group management. Copying data to external storage is initiated through the control API on a per file basis.
Vortex VR-6511S8 Features:
· Compact Rugged Data Recorder with up to 2TB with SSD and up to 4TB with HDD
· VXS (VITA 41) recording and playback system
· Embedded storage using 6U VXS Quad 2.5” SATA solid state or rotating hard disk drive storage
· High-speed off-load to commercial Storage Area Networks (SANs)
