For current VITA specifications: opsy.st/vitaspecifications
Editor’s note: This update is based on the January 2012 VSO meeting. Additional VSO meetings are scheduled for March and May 2012.
VSO ANSI accreditation
Accredited as a Standards Development Organization (SDO) in June 1993 by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the VITA Standards Organization (VSO) meets every two months to address vital embedded bus and board industry standards issues. Information on ANSI/VITA standards is available on the VITA website at www.vita.com.
VSO study and working group activities
Standards within the VSO may be initiated by a study group and developed by a working group. A study group requires the sponsorship of only one VSO member. A working group requires the sponsorship of at least three VITA members.
VITA 17.2, Serial Front Panel Data Port (SFPDP) Channel Bonded Protocol
Objective: Increase the bandwidth of the 17.1 link by increasing the speed of the link and by providing the ability to channel bond several lanes together.
Status: This proposed standard completed a working group ballot in December 2008. The chairman at that time left his company and no work has taken place until now. Greg Scheuller, StreamDSP, has agreed to become the chair and work has begin to update the standard and clarify the compliance language.
VITA 60, Alternative Connector for VPX
Objective: Standardize an alternative connector for VPX that is PCB compatible but not mechanically interoperable with the VITA 46 standard.
Status: VITA 60 has completed ANSI balloting. All comments have been reviewed and resolved. The results of the ballot have been submitted to ANSI and recognition is expected shortly.
ANSI/VITA 61.0, XMC 2.0
Objective: To specify an alternative connector for use on XMC mezzanine modules.
Status: VITA 61.0 completed an ANSI recirculation ballot in September 2011 and has received recognition as an American National Standard.
VITA 62, Power Supply Standard
Objective: To provide guidelines for building a power supply module that can be used to power VPX chassis. The module will fit within the standard envelope defined for VPX modules using the VITA 48 specifications.
Status: VITA 62 completed a successful working group ballot in October 2011 and was moved into the ANSI process. The initial ANSI ballot has closed and comments are being reviewed.
ANSI/VITA 65, OpenVPX
Objective: To provide a standard for commonly used VPX profiles.
Status: An ANSI recirculation ballot has been completed and comments are being reviewed. The results of the ballot will be submitted to ANSI shortly.
VITA 66.0, Optical Interconnect on VPX – Base Standard, and VITA 66.1, Optical Interconnect on VPX – MT Variant
Objective: Define a family of blind mate fiber optic interconnects for use with VITA 46 backplanes and plug-in modules.
Status: VITA 66.0 and VITA 66.1 have completed their ANSI ballots and both have received recognition as American National Standards. Copies are available from the VITA website.
VITA 67.0, Coaxial Interconnect on VPX – Base Standard
Objective: To establish a structure for implementing blind mate analog coaxial interconnects with VPX backplanes and plug-in modules, and to define a specific family of interconnects and configurations within that structure.
Status: VITA 67.0 has completed its recirculation ANSI ballot. The results of the ballot were submitted to ANSI and VITA 67.0 has been recognized as an American National Standard. VITA 67.1 and 67.2 have been revised and are currently in ANSI recirculation ballot.
VITA 68, VPX Compliance Channel
Objective: Develop a backplane compliance channel standard to ensure interoperability.
Status: The VITA 68 working group has completed a statement of work and the initial draft standard, which underwent a working group ballot in July 2011. An RFQ for a simulation is being prepared and should be sent out in January 2012. The initial draft contains guidelines for channel design that will be refined by the simulation.
