“Secure Digital has become one of the leading standards for flash memory cards that are widely used in smartphones, personal media players, personal navigation devices and digital cameras,” said Brian Faith, QuickLogic’s Vice President, Solution Marketing. “The recent addition of SDHC to the SD standard really underscores the strong demand for ever increasing storage capacity. Our SDIO host controller solution with SDHC support allows designers to easily connect high capacity SD cards to applications processors.”

Target applications for this solution include high capacity storage for navigation systems that hold maps and point-of-interest databases, digital cameras required to hold images, and camcorders that use solid-state recording media. By extending the functionality of the SDIO host controller, QuickLogic provides designers with a fast track for adding SDHC compatibility to their products.

“Alternative solutions may not be hardware compatible with SDHC, and those that are will still require driver upgrades,” notes Faith. “QuickLogic’s SDHC implementation provides a complete solution, including both a hardware and software driver that can be added to new or existing host controller implementations.” The programmability also allows the host controller solution to be configured for attachment to the customer’s processor of choice and to offer a scaleable number of ports.

Availability

QuickLogic’s SDHC enhancement is available immediately for SDIO host controllers implemented in the company’s PolarPro and Eclipse II families. Contact QuickLogic for information on the supported operating systems.
