ALT Software’s next generation embedded graphics processor drivers to support GPU-based parallel processing

ALT Software Inc.ALT Software Inc.—May 31, 20120

May 31, 2012, Toronto, Canada. ALT Software is announcing that its latest graphics driver architecture will include support for the OpenCL API to enable applications to leverage graphics processors for parallel processing tasks. Embedded system manufacturers have become increasingly interested in leveraging OpenCL to substantially increase the computational power of resource constrained embedded devices. OpenCL has already gained tremendous popularity on consumer devices such as desktop and gaming systems, but until now a solution has not been available for embedded computing platforms that use real-time operating systems (RTOS). ALT Software’s OpenCL solution can be used in conjunction with their next generation OpenGL graphics driver product line and will allow embedded application designers to easily leverage the GPU for parallel processing tasks.

“The future of embedded computing includes enabling a device to leverage the GPU for parallel processing,” said Robert Atkinson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, ALT Software. “Avionics situational awareness devices such as flight display systems, or consumer and industrial embedded mobile devices can leverage OpenCL enabled graphics processors to yield performance improvements that can range from two to twenty times in magnitude depending on the tasks being performed.”

ALT Software’s first OpenCL supported graphics processor will be the AMD Radeon E6760, a GPU which is of great interest to avionics display system manufacturers due to its high performance graphics and OpenCL support. The first deployment will be in a next generation situational awareness avionics platform as part of United States Department of Defense procurement. The embedded software solution will support OpenCL 1.1 as well as the OpenGL ES 1.1 and ES 2.0 graphics APIs. Support for RTOSes such as Green Hills INTEGRITY 10, INTEGRITY-178B, Wind River VxWorks, and VxWorks 653, are planned.

ALT Software has been delivering graphics solutions to high reliability embedded system manufacturers for over 18 years. Their device drivers are used by industry leaders such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, EADS, L3 Communications, Saab, Maquet, and others.
