Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions\’ VPX3-1TB 3U VPX Flash Storage Module receives NIST Cryptographic Security Certification |
ASHBURN, VA – Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions (CWCDS), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls, has announced that its industry leading high capacity rugged solid state drive, the VPX3-1TB 3U VPX Flash Storage Module (FSM) has completed the stringent Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 Level 2 cryptographic validation at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP). This high performance, rugged, high-capacity, solid-state SATA storage card was designed for size, weight and power (SWaP) constrained military applications that require cryptography and must ensure the integrity of “data at rest” in demanding military environments such as those endured by helicopters, UAVs and radar systems. The compact small form factor module delivers 1 Terabyte of SLC NAND flash memory and can be configured as a JBOD or RAID. To ensure the security of critical data, the VPX3-1TB FSM provides an NIST-certified 256-bit AES data encryption capability.
“Our customers increasingly demand secure memory that performs optimally in harsh military environments,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions. “The VPX3-1TB FSM raises the bar for open standard solid state memory performance with a Terabyte of flash memory deployed on a 3U VPX, VITA 46 or VITA 48.2 REDI, slot card. FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certification ensures customers that the VPX3-1TB FSM supports the high levels of security demanded by the most sensitive military and government applications.”
Federal agencies, Department of Defense (DoD), industry, and the public rely on cryptography for the protection of information and communications used in electronic commerce, critical infrastructure, and other application areas. About the CMVP
The CMVP was established by NIST in order to validate cryptographic modules to the FIPS 140-2: Security Requirements for Cryptographic Modules. The CMVP is a joint effort between NIST in the U.S. and Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) in Canada. Those modules successfully validated as conforming to FIPS 140-2 are accepted by both countries’ Federal Agencies for the protection of sensitive information. Furthermore, CMVP cryptographic validation is also anticipated to meet many NATO country requirements for secure information technology-related applications.
To prepare the VPX3-1TB FSM to pass FIPS 140-2 cryptographic testing, CWCDS worked closely with Corsec Security Inc., Fairfax, Virginia, an independent FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria project management and validation consulting company.
“Government agencies have stringent requirements on purchasing network security products and are mandated to use only approved products which have achieved FIPS 140-2 validation to ensure that the security claims stated are valid,” according to Matthew Appler, CEO and co-founder of Corsec Security. “Undergoing this complex government security standard clearly demonstrates Curtiss-Wright’s strong commitment to providing customers with proven third-party assurance regarding the VPX3-1TB FSM.”
The VPX3-1TB FSM’s 1TB of SLC NAND flash memory is organized in four banks of 256 GB each in a 1” pitch 3U VPX module conforming to a VITA 46 and VITA 48.2 REDI standards. The four banks of flash can be configured to appear to the host processor as four (4) separate SATA drives or as a single SATA drive with hardware RAID0 support. To ensure long-life and optimal performance, the card features industry standard error correction, wear leveling and bad block management. This conduction-cooled module incorporates unique tool-less wedgelocks for easy removal and insertion.
