HIGH WYCOMBE, UK – December 4, 2012 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions (CWCDS), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls, has announced that it has begun shipping an enhanced version of its MPMC-9335 Multi-Platform Mission Computer (MPMC). The MPMC-9335 is the latest member of Curtiss-Wright’s extensive family of fully integrated COTS highly rugged, fully integrated and qualified MPMC subsystems. With its latest generation quad-core Intel® Core™i7 single board computer (SBC) and 240-core NVIDIA Fermi GPGPU, the cost effective, rugged MPMC-9335 is especially well-suited for demanding compute intensive applications such as image, data and radar processing.
The enhanced MPMC-9335 3-slot rugged VPX system now supports an extended operating temperature range, with intermittent operation rated at up to 71°C and continuous operation at 65°C baseplate temperatures. This MPMC is designed to be easily and quickly configured to meet the demanding requirements of defense, aerospace and law enforcement applications ranging from benign laboratory to harsh deployed ground vehicle environments. This compact and lightweight small form factor subsystem is ideal for space/weight/power (SWaP)-constrained platforms such as UAVs and ground vehicles.
“We are pleased to announce that we are now shipping the MPMC-9335 to leading US customers,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions. “This fully-integrated COTS Multi-Platform Mission Computer is ideal for quick deployment of tried and tested rugged Curtiss-Wright COTS processing, loaded with the latest Intel and NVIDIA high performance processors and I/O options in field-ready, risk-slashing affordable configurations.”
Cutting edge Intel® and NVIDIA® Processing
Developed by Curtiss-Wright’s Rugged Embedded Systems group in High Wycombe, UK, the MPMC-9335 delivers the latest generation processing power through the combination of its CWCDS 3U VPX VPX3-1256 quad core Intel®-based SBC and leading edge 3U VPX VPX3-491 NVIDIA® Fermi GPGPU-based compute engine, both of which are contained in a rugged enclosure that measures a compact 250 cubic inches.
Advanced Cooling for High Reliable Operation
Designed with advanced packaging techniques to ensure optimal performance in harsh military environments, the MPMC-9335 operates in ambient temperatures up to 71°C using baseplate cooling. To maximize reliability, the system’s advanced thermal management design enables system integrators to implement a highly capable processing system that requires no fans, vehicle supplied air, liquid or other demands from the platform within which it is deployed.
In addition to its VPX3-1256 SBC and VPX3-491 GPGPU engine, the MPMC-9335’s standard configuration includes two (2) MilCAN offload controllers, a free VPX slot for a high capacity/high speed SSD memory module and an integrated heater to support cold-starts below -40°C. The system’s integrated 28 VDC power supply unit supports DEF-STAN 61-5 Part 6, Issue 6.
Custom Variations Available
The MPMC-9335 can be ordered as a modified commercial off the shelf (MCOTS) product with a modified front panel connector set, modified backplane wiring or a modified card set to meet particular needs. Contact your local Curtiss-Wright representative for more information on how these system configurations can meet your program requirements.
Environmental Qualifications
The MPMC-9335 is designed to meet the harsh environments of many military and aerospace computing applications. To ensure the highest level of performance, the MPMC-9335 has been designed to
pass numerous environmental tests including Temperature, Altitude, Shock, Vibration, Fluid Susceptibility, Voltage Spikes, Electrostatic Discharge and more. Circuit cards installed in the sealed compact chassis are completely isolated from external environmental conditions such as humidity, dust and sand.
The Integrated System Advantage
As a fully integrated off-the-shelf compute solution, the MPMC-9335 can greatly reduce up-front development costs. It delivers economies of scale in production that reduce recurring costs while meeting the I/O, performance and environmental requirements of unique, demanding military programs. It features a rugged enclosure designed to the meet military specifications including MIL-STD-810 for environmental conditions, MIL-STD-461 for EMI, and DEF-STAN 61-5 for power. This rugged computing system is designed to fill multiple roles in air and land vehicles.

About Curtiss-Wright Controls Rugged Embedded Systems
As an independent design and manufacturing facility, the CWCDS Rugged Embedded Systems group provides its UK and European customers with ITAR-free designs. The Rugged Embedded Systems group mirrors the resources and capabilities of the CWCDS Integrated Systems team located in its Santa Clarita, CA, to provide the equivalent level of systems integration and support.
Rugged Embedded Systems products are designed using Curtiss-Wright Controls and third-party components, including hardware, software and HDL. The resulting fully integrated systems promote design re-use and minimize customer NRE for future designs. CWCDS’s UK/Europe-based Rugged Embedded Systems group provides comprehensive subsystems design services, including the coordination of custom enclosure development, board level design and customer support. All aspects of subsystem integration are overseen, including program management, supply chain management, and life cycle management.
Rugged Embedded Systems products leverage COTS board content. These advanced processor modules are tested and proven for interoperability in a myriad of hardened military application environments. Because they are based on existing COTS components, and re-use designs when possible, Rugged Embedded Systems products are economically priced and provide a stable and solid platform for building faster-to-market applications.
Additionally, the Rugged Embedded Systems strategy greatly simplifies a customer’s supply-chain requirements. That’s because a Rugged Embedded Systems product has only a single part number to track, rather than a list of numbers, from a variety of suppliers, for all the disparate components (boards, cables, chassis, etc.) that comprise the product.
Pricing for the MPMC-9335 starts around $36,000. For availability and detailed pricing information, please contact the factory.
