LynuxWorks, Inc., a world leader in the embedded safety and security software market, today announced the upcoming availability of LynxOS-178 2.2.3. The release brings this FAA Level A certifiable real-time operating system (RTOS) to new Power Architecture based platforms and designs and offers many new features for avionics developers.
LynxOS-178 is a safety partitioned real-time operating system based on open standards APIs, and has been successfully deployed on many commercial and military avionics systems. LynxOS-178 is also the first and only commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) operating system to receive Reusable Software Component (RSC) acceptance from the FAA for DO-178B certification. RSC certification acknowledges a speedier, smoother and more reliable development path for system integrators.
“With this latest version of LynxOS-178, LynuxWorks is offering its industry leading safety critical RTOS for use on the next generation of avionics platforms built using the Power Architecture processors,” said John Blevins, director of Product Marketing at LynuxWorks. “New optimizations in the product will also offer better performance and memory utilization for avionics developers to manage the Size, Weight, Power and Cost (SWaPC) for their new designs.”
LynxOS-178 2.2.3 is based on a new set of Power Architecture optimized tools to give an easy migration for existing designs to new Power Architectures such as the QorIQ family from Freescale, and will offer off-the-shelf BSPs for COTs and development boards from Freescale, GE Intelligent Systems and Curtiss Wright Controls. LynxOS-178 2.2.3 also offers both a native POSIX API and FACE application programming interface for easy migration of software applications across different commercial and military avionics systems, helping to reduce the cost and risk associated with the re-use of software components.
About LynxOS-178 RTOS
LynxOS-178 is a commercial off-the-shelf COTS RTOS that fully satisfies the objectives of the DO-178B level A specification and meets requirements for Integrated Modular Avionics developers. LynxOS-178 delivers the security and real-time responsiveness needed for safety-critical systems and provides a low-risk path to DO-178B certification for developers to meet the technical requirements in the production of software for airborne systems. In addition, LynxOS-178 provides full POSIX conformance, enabling developers to take advantage of the time-to-market and investment-protection benefits of open standards-based development. The powerful formula of DO-178B certification and POSIX conformance allows developers to meet the most stringent requirements for real-time safety-critical applications while at the same time ensure application portability, software reuse and interoperability between embedded systems.
