SYSGO releases version 4.2 of its ELinOS Industrial Grade Linux product

Launched in 1998, ELinOS was the first industrial grade embedded Linux solution. By assisting early adopters in their projects, especially at the beginning in the industrial automation sector, SYSGO acquired an invaluable experience that has been built into the product. Making the customers life easier and ensuring the industrial quality of their applications are the key factors that expanded the use of ELinOS in other sectors like avionics, defense, transportation and medical.

“Linux is being considered as a valid option by a growing number of embedded application engineers, especially since the 2.6 version”, said Jacques Brygier, VP Marketing. “Flexibility and a broad range of functionality, APIs and drivers contribute to this success. However, many traps and difficulties remain for the newcomers, the non experts or simply the users who have no time to sort out the proliferation of new components. ELinOS 4.2 is the latest version of the embedded Linux environment that solves this problem, and gives the customer the most up to date usable technology.”

The new 4.2 version brings the following improvements:

– Integration of kernel 2.6.22; since version 2.6.20, improvements are available in areas such as the support of virtualization and SMP or, more directly related to embedded systems, areas like POSIX, the x86-64 kernel, and improved determinism

– An enhanced version of CODEO, the Eclipse based development environment that provides guided configuration, remote debugging (often down to the hardware instruction level), target monitoring, remote application deployment, and timing analyses in addition to standard application development features such as compilers and assemblers

– Xenomai 2.4.x support for x86, PowerPC and ARM platforms

– GTK 2.10.x support for graphical applications generation

ELinOS v4.2 Industrial Grade Linux includes Kernel 2.6.22, tested and validated on the supported platforms and incorporates all necessary security patches. The 2.6.22 version brings many improvements in the areas of support of TCP, UDP-Lite, IPv6, or SMP. ELinOS Industrial Grade Linux explicitly supports the needs of industrial automation customers providing solutions for CAN, CANOpen, VME, IPv4/IPv6, EtherCAT, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi and many more. For example, our avionics customers can benefit from our implementation of standards like AFDX, ARINC 429 or MIL-STD-1553. Xenomai is available as a Linux extension if more real-time constraints are required. Many BSPs corresponding to the most successful boards on the market are also included as well as BSPs for virtualization engines such as QEMU (x86, PPC, ARM) and VMware (x86), or for the other SYSGO flagship product PikeOS (x86, PPC, MIPS).

Availability

ELinOS 4.2 is available immediately. The five families of supported processors are the x86, PowerPC, ARM, SH and MIPS. ELinOS 4.2 is available for Linux and Windows hosted platforms.
