SAN JOSE, CA – Lynx Software Technologies, a world leader in the embedded safety and security software market, today announced the availability of its board support package (BSP) for the Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions VPX6-187 rugged single board computer (SBC). The new BSP is a part of LynxOS-178 2.2.3, the latest release of the safety critical RTOS (real-time operating system) from Lynx Software Technologies. The BSP brings this FAA Level A certifiable RTOS to Curtiss-Wright’s VPX6-187 board and adds support for the Freescale® Power® Architecture QorIQ P4040/4080 System On a Chip multi-core processor. The LynxOS-178 2.2.3 release for the VPX6-187 includes support of the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) 2.0 which aids in the development of portable military avionics platforms.
LynxOS-178 is the first and only commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) operating system to receive Reusable Software Component (RSC) acceptance from the FAA for DO-178B certification. RSC certification acknowledges a speedier, smoother and more reliable development path for system integrators at a much lowered cost.
Curtiss-Wright’s VPX6-187 can support up to 8 GB of DDR3 SDRAM, Gigabit Ethernet, USB, Serial ATA, and MIL-STD-1553 using Freescale’s QorIQ P4080 processor with 8 E500MC Cores at speeds up to 1.5 GHz. The release of this BSP from Lynx Software Tech has created a foundation on which to build a DO-178B certifiable multi-core RTOS solution using a Firewalled Asymmetric Multi-Processing (FAMP) architecture.
“With this latest BSP, we’re offering DO-178B customers a migration path to next-generation PowerPC QorIQ multi-core hardware resulting in more performance, more memory, and the ability to run more sophisticated avionics applications on a safety-critical OS,” said John Blevins, director of Product Marketing at LynuxWorks. “Customers that use Curtiss-Wright boards and our RTOS should feel confident and secure that they are getting the best support for their hardware and software combinations for all of their safety-critical applications. Combining LynxOS-178 with the VPX6-187 gives military avionics developers the ability to develop next generation applications using several FACE 2.0 profiles including the Security, Safety, Safety-Extended, and General Purpose profiles.”
Based on the Power® Architecture QorIQ SOC processor, Curtiss-Wright’s rugged VPX6-187 is a premium choice in embedded and high-performance computing. Each of the
8 cores has its own 64 KB L1 cache and its own 128 MB L2 cache helping to ensure deterministic performance in a safety environment. With four Gigabit Ethernet interfaces and two 64-bit PMCs on independent PCI buses this is a very powerful foundation for sophisticated Avionics applications.
“Thanks to its FAA RSC certification, the LynxOS-178 2.2.3 board support package provides system designers with a rapid, reliable and cost-effective development path for their DO-178B certifiable Safety Critical applications,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions division.
About LynxOS-178 RTOS
LynxOS-178 is a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) RTOS that fully satisfies the objectives of the DO-178B level A specification and meets requirements for Integrated Modular Avionics developers. LynxOS-178 delivers the security and real-time responsiveness needed for safety-critical systems and provides a low-risk path to DO-178B certification for developers to meet the technical requirements in the production of software for airborne systems. In addition, LynxOS-178 provides full POSIX conformance, enabling developers to take advantage of the time-to-market and investment-protection benefits of open standards-based development. The powerful formula of DO-178B certification and POSIX conformance allows developers to meet the most stringent requirements for real-time safety-critical applications while at the same time ensure application portability, software reuse and interoperability between embedded systems.
