New VPX3-671 is first to bring VICTORY Networking and Computing resources to rugged 3U VPX module |
EMBEDDED TECH TRENDS 2015, Phoenix, Ariz. – Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that its Defense Solutions division has introduced the industry’s first single-slot commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) module solution for integrating the essential networking elements needed to implement the U.S. Army’s VICTORY (Vehicular Integration for C4ISR/EW Interoperability) standard on legacy and future ground vehicles. The new VPX3-671 VICTORY Ethernet Switch and Single Board Computer (SBC) is a rugged 3U VPX module. It features a core subset of the advanced network switch and computing resources of Curtiss-Wright’s groundbreaking Digital Beachhead™ subsystem. The lightweight, compact VPX3-671 provides a line replaceable module (LRM) approach for implementing VICTORY, the U.S. Army’s mandated approach for modernizing ground vehicle networks, eliminating “stovepiped” system functionality, and increasing interoperability. Using the SWaP-C optimized VPX3-671, system integrators can quickly and cost-effectively embed the networking and vehicle management processing capabilities needed to modernize today’s tactical ground vehicles.
“Our new VPX3-671 module, based on our popular and proven Digital Beachhead™ VICTORY subsystem, is the industry’s first COTS card designed for building embedded backplane-based VICTORY solutions,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense Solutions division. “It provides system designers with many of Digital Beachhead’s network ‘backbone’ features in a compact, low power 3U LRM format.”
About the VPX3-671
The VPX3-671 delivers a fully-featured 12-port managed Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch that is tested to be compliant with the VICTORY specification as an Infrastructure Switch. It features a powerful set of networking features to implement high-speed advanced in-vehicle network architectures and supports connectivity for legacy 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps Ethernet devices, as well as today’s 1000 Mbps Ethernet systems. The VPX3-671 networking core supports a wide range of popular switching features, including support for IPv4/v6, VLANs, IGMP multicast, QoS, MSTP/RSTP, link aggregation, port mirroring, jumbo frames and static routing for WAN connectivity. Precision Time Protocol (IEEE-1588v2/PTP) is also supported, accurately synchronizing time between network nodes, and can be locked to a GPS time source to become a master clock.
The VPX3-671’s 1.2 GHz Freescale™ Power Architecture® QorIQ™ Dual-core P2020-based general purpose SBC is optional and is installed as a mezzanine daughtercard. The SBC can be used to host VICTORY Services and to support customer developed applications such as vetronics control and Conditioned Based Maintenance data collection.
In addition to efficiently implementing VICTORY architectures into tactical ground vehicles, the VPX3-671 is also ideal for use in any system application that requires a combined SWaP-C optimized Ethernet switch and general purpose SBC.
Software Support
The VPX3-671 comes completely integrated with all network management software. Software support for the Freescale SBC mezzanine includes Wind River® Linux® and VxWorks™ operating environments.
Curtiss-Wright: the VICTORY Leader
Curtiss-Wright established itself as a leading supplier of COTS VICTORY solutions with the introduction in September 2012 of its Digital Beachhead™ 16-port Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) Network Switch and high performance, power efficient Vehicle Management Computer. Digital Beachhead is the industry’s first low-cost rugged Ground Vehicle “appliance” for modernizing ground vehicles to comply with the VICTORY standard. Since its debut, Digital Beachhead has generated significant interest in the Ground Vehicle community with multiple units acquired by and shipped to U.S. Army VICTORY test centers for evaluation.
