Tundra Semiconductor’s RapidIO and VME Products Offer Optimal Performance and Reliability
Ottawa, Ontario – January 15, 2007 – Tundra Semiconductor Corporation (TSX:TUN), the leader in System Interconnect, today presented to industry leaders at the VMEbus International Trade Association’s (VITA) annual Bus and Board Conference in Long Beach, California.
In his keynote address, Tundra President and Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Hoste stated, “RapidIO is the right serial interconnect because the technology provides the optimal performance and reliability for next-generations critical embedded systems. When availability and performance are critical, RapidIO is the serial interconnect of choice for embedded systems.”
Tundra presented the compelling benefits of adding RapidIO serial interconnect to VME-based designs, concluding that RapidIO increases system performance for critical embedded systems by offering a low latency, high bandwidth connection for multiple processors and seamless support for globally shared memory. RapidIO also offers the lowest system cost when compared to other serial interconnects.
“RapidIO is a world-class technology with the largest, strongest embedded ecosystem of suppliers, proven interoperability, and a broad range of inter-working abilities with PCI, PCI Express, and message passing. The benefits of RapidIO are accompanied by a road map that adds functionality and technology to keep pace with systems’ cost and performance demands,” stated Tom Cox, Executive Director of the RapidIO Trade Associations (RTA).
In addition to the expertise of developing and bringing to market world-class VME products, such as the UniverseTM II and Tsi148TM, Tundra was a founding member of the RTA and the first supplier to bring RapidIO switches to market. Working closely with its VME customers, Tundra has designed RapidIO switches with the critical embedded market specifically in mind. Tundra’s existing and future customers will benefit from reliable VME products as well as new RapidIO switches which will serve new designs for the next 25 years and beyond. With Tundra’s Tsi148 VME Bridge with 2eSST, the parallel VMEbus has reached a maximum performance level. The addition of serial interconnect to VME designs will increase performance in line with the exponential growth of processor performance and will support higher data bandwidth and higher peripheral device requirements.
“The VITA membership is seriously considering the benefits of adopting RapidIO for their critical embedded system designs. Now is the right time for the VME community to adopt a serial interconnect in order to enhance performance in new designs. The value that RapidIO brings to embedded systems, along with performance reliability and low latency makes it the right choice for future critical embedded designs,” said Ray Alderman, Executive Director of VITA.

About Tundra VME Bridges
Tundra is the market leader in VME Interconnect technology with more than ten years experience in providing VME solutions and technical support to the embedded systems industry. The Tundra VME System Interconnect products such as the Universe II and Tsi148 dominate the VME market and enhance the performance of traditional VME-based applications for military communications, industrial automation, and medical imaging. VME Bridges are designed to connect together the two most widely adopted busses in the world – PCI and VME. Tundra’s Tsi148 connects the fastest available parallel versions – PCIX and VME2eSST while the Universe II connects legacy versions of these same busses – PCI and VME64.
About Tundra RapidIO® Switches
Tundra switches provide chip-to-chip interconnect between RapidIO end-points and can replace existing proprietary backplane fabrics for board-to-board interconnect. As a founding member of the RapidIO Trade Association and long-time Steering Committee member, Tundra continues to provide leadership in the development of the RapidIO standard and was the first semiconductor vendor to bring Parallel and Serial RapidIO switches to market. RapidIO is the leading serial interconnect standard for embedded systems and is supported by industry leaders such as, Alcatel-Lucent, AMCC, EMC Corporation, Ericsson, Freescale Semiconductor, Lucent Technologies and Texas Instruments. The Tundra family of RapidIO switches includes the Tsi574TM, Tsi576TM, Tsi578TM, Tsi568ATM, Tsi564ATM and Tsi500TM.
