OTTAWA, May 25, 2011 — QNX Software Systems Limited, a global leader in operating systems and middleware for connected embedded systems, today announced the commercial availability of the QNX® Neutrino® RTOS Secure Kernel™ 6.5.0, an enhanced version of the company’s Common Criteria-certified realtime operating system. Designed for power plants, defense systems, subway control centers, government networks, and other mission-critical applications, the new release allows developers to choose from a greater variety of single- and multi-core processors based on the ARM, Power, and x86 architectures. It also allows developers to leverage the latest features and performance enhancements of QNX OS technology.
The QNX Neutrino RTOS Secure Kernel is the only RTOS certified at Common Criteria ISO/IEC 15408 Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4+ to support adaptive partitioning, an efficient form of time partitioning that helps prevent malicious code and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks from monopolizing the CPU. It is also the first Common Criteria-certified RTOS to support symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) on a wide range of multi-core processor platforms, enabling developers to achieve the parallelism necessary for successful multi-core designs.
With the release of version 6.5.0, the QNX Neutrino RTOS Secure Kernel now supports SMP on multi-core processors based on Freescale Power e500MC processor cores, and on a variety of multi-core processors based on the Intel® Architecture. It also allows developers to take advantage of features introduced in the QNX® Neutrino® RTOS 6.5.0, including faster kernel performance under heavy memory utilization, support for a greater number of x86 boards, and an innovative Persistent Publish/Subscribe (PPS) Service that helps simplify the design and maintenance of complex systems that integrate many hardware devices and software components.
“The QNX Neutrino RTOS Secure Kernel goes beyond competing implementations by utilizing a true microkernel architecture, which embodies the principles that form the basis of modern security standards,” said Yi Zheng, operating system product manager, QNX Software Systems. “This enhanced version confirms our commitment to providing customers with standards-based, certified products that not only provide assured levels of portability and security, but also offer the scalability and design options required for next-generation designs.”
Certification to the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation provides validation from a certified laboratory that the QNX Neutrino RTOS Secure Kernel fulfills the security functional requirements and the enhanced methodologies and security controls required for EAL 4+.
Recently, QNX Software Systems also announced the coming release of QNX Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus™, the only RTOS to offer both IEC 61508 certification at Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL 3) and Common Criteria ISO/IEC 15408 certification at Evaluation Assurance Level 4+ (EAL 4+).
