As R&D budgets are reduced, enabling flexibility and code reuse through the use of common building blocks across the enterprise are keys to greater affordability. These software components need to be modular, upgradeable and customizable to meet the needs of various hardware platforms, but defining the right software requirements and avoiding hidden costs is still challenging.
