New MM-6171 XMC Features Xilinx® FPGA Memory Controller for 2, 4 or 8GB of on-card SDRAM

CHATSWORTH, CA – December 23, 2010 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, OpenVPX™, VXS and CompactPCI products for the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) market, has introduced the MM-6171 XMC a new high performance, rugged Buffer Memory module designed for use in digital signal processing (DSP) Systems.

The new XMC mezzanine module card supports either Serial RapidIO (SRIO) or PCI Express (PCIe, 4-lane) host interfaces with up to 8 Gbytes of DDR2 SDRAM buffer memory with ECC. The MM-6171speeds and simplifies the integration of high speed fabrics such as SRIO and PCIe and buffer memory into digital signal processing subsystems for applications such as high-speed buffering and recording of signal data and high-performance RAM drives, where a modular memory buffer controlled by a powerful FPGA is required. Applications include RADAR signal processing, signal intelligence (SIGINT), and airborne image acquisition and image buffering.

“The MM-6171 XMC has already been designed into many SRIO-based systems,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, “Now, with the addition of the PCI Express interface option, many more types of application and host board can be deployed by our customers.”

The MM-6171 XMC can be used with both Intel® x86 or Freescale® Power Architecture based host boards to provide high-speed temporary storage. Its industry standard high-speed serial (HSS) interconnects are tied directly to memory to enable significantly simplified access to buffer memory. The card provides full-feature DMA performance with minimal processor intervention. It supports a wide variety of uses such as high-speed temporary storage, expanded system memory, interleaving, data aggregation and warehousing.

This small form factor XMC (VITA 42) card interfaces to the host through the P15 connector. The card supports four (4) HSS links running at up to 3.125 Gbps to provide a high-speed full duplex interface.

Up to 8GB of Buffer Memory

The DDR2 SDRAM provides superior performance with low latency, while the bus interface with its full-featured DMA engine enables transactions without host intervention. With ECC support, the MM-6171’s memory can be used to improve the data integrity of applications running on an SBC that does not have on-board ECC.

On-Card FPGA

An on-card Xilinx® Virtex®-5 LX110T FPGA, functioning as a memory controller, connects the high-speed signals to the memory arrays. The FPGA can support logic customization to implement additional algorithm accelerating functions. The FPGA has two independent memory arrays, each capable of interfacing to 1, 2, or 4 GB of DDR2 memory. Each array is 72-bits wide, with a 64-bit data path and error correcting code (ECC). Single-bit errors are corrected and double-bit errors are detected through the memory controller logic. The DDR2 arrays provide over 3GB/s of data bandwidth.

The MM-6171 also includes a fully verified bus interface and full-featured DMA engines for both the SRIO and PCIe interfaces. The SRIO DMA engine supports corner-turning and striding to provide advanced functionality for DSP designs. The striding function enables the card to offload some data movement task from the host processor.

MM-6171 Performance Features:

* 2, 4 or 8 GB high-speed DDR2 SDRAM
