New PBOD Flash Disk Card is Ideal for Environments Too Harsh for Mechanical Hard Disk Drives

LEESBURG, VA – May 17, 2006 — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX and CompactPCI products, has announced the PBOD, a new Flash Disk PMC or XMC card that delivers up to 64 Gbytes of high-speed storage. The PBOD is ideal for applications in harsh environments where extreme temperature, shock or vibration make the use of mechanical hard disk drives impractical. This new high density Flash mezzanine card can function either as “just a bunch of disks” (JBOD) or as a RAID device via software support.

”The PBOD is an excellent small-form factor solution for those customers that require mass storage in extreme environmental conditions,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager of Curtiss Wright’s Modular Solutions group. “In addition to providing the highest density Flash storage capacity available on a XMC/PMC card, the PBOD also delivers 40MB/s and greater performance, far exceeding competitive offerings.”

The PBOD is supported natively in systems that support USB Flash drives and it appears to the host operating system as up to eight (8) USB Flash drives that can be operated independently at rates over 10 MB/s each. Using RAID software, data rates exceeding 40MB/s can be sustained and the array of Flash drives appears as a single logical drive.

Advanced features of the PBOD include ECC NAND Flash correction to ensure 1 bit per 256 correction and 2 bit error detection. In addition, the life of the drive is significantly extended through use of wear leveling technology, which ensures that program/erase cycles are distributed across the media, eliminating premature device failure resulting from frequent erase cycles on the same Flash memory block.

Performance Features:

PMC or XMC NAND Flash Storage

Large Capacity

Up to 64 Gbytes

High Performance

Up to 10 Mbytes/s per drive

Software support for multiple RAID levels

Over 40 Mbytes/s aggregate performance
