ACTIS Computer Introduces a New Concept based on PICMG and VITA Standards

The new ACTIS Computer solution for high quality, compact and cost effective embedded computer builds with the PICMG COM.0 COM Express standard for computer module, and the very reliable well established IEEE1386.1-2001 PMC standard for I/O modules.

The combination of these two efficient board form factors will bring to the embedded computer users a very flexible solution which will support several hundreds configurations of CPU and I/O functions in a compact form factor of less than 165x160x47 mm (6.5×6.3×1.9 in).

Combined with the availability of two PowerPC COM Express module by ACTIS Computer, this new concept will enable significant cost and size reduction for applications that require VME or cPCI rack previously, while keeping the same modularity for extensions.

The standard availability of Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet ports will add even more flexibility to integrate multiple computer nodes in a network where each control unit will be located where the functionality is required and will communicate through a managed switch like in a blade system but without the necessity to concentrate all units in the same rack.

ACTIS Computer is also providing custom design services for carrier board development based on customer’s application requirements. Please contact ACTIS Computer custom department: custom@actis computer.com

About the PICMG Computer on Module (COM) Standard

Released in 2005 by the PICMG Consortium, the COM Express Standard (COM.0) specifies a very small form factor computer modules aimed at a wide variety of vertical applications in the embedded marketplace. The Computer-on-Module approach puts an entire computer host-complex power on a small form factor module that can be mounted on larger carrier boards containing the application specific IO and power circuitry. It also allows flexibility in standard form factor boards that require upgradeable host functionality. This brings benefits to system designers, such as reduced time-to-market, cost-effective customization and lower product lifecycle costs.

About the PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC) specification.

Released in 2001, the IEEE1386.1-2001 specification defines the physical and environmental layers of a PCI mezzanine card (PMC) family to be usable on (but not limited to) single slot VME, VME64 and VME64x boards, CompactPCI boards, Multibus I and Multibus II boards, desktop computers, portable computers, servers, and similar types of applications. The electrical and logical layers are based on the PCI specification from the PCI Special Interest Group. The PCI mezzanine cards allow for a variety of optional function expansions for the host system. I/O functionality from the PMC may be either through the mezzanine front panel, or via the backplane by routing the I/O signals through the mezzanine connector to the host.
